NBA Betting: Basketball Stock Market Report for 3/5/13
Basketball teams go like the stock market. Sometimes they’re hot and you have to buy them, and sometimes they’re cold and you have to sell. Our NBA betting tips show the teams that you should hold and the teams you should ditch here at Bang the Book!
Portland Trail Blazers: There are a number of teams in the Western Conference that can still sneak into the back end of the playoffs if they can catch some fire here in the next few weeks, and Portland might be one of those teams. The Blazers have won three of their last four SU and have covered five in a row from an ATS standpoint. Here’s the problem. The team has done its damage at home, where it is 15-12-3 ATS on the season. Now, it’s back on the road for three games against Memphis, San Antonio, and New Orleans. That wouldn’t be fun for any team, let alone one that is just 11-18 ATS as visitors this season. Still, for now, we’ll celebrate what the Trail Blazers have accomplished.
Denver Nuggets: Dear Oklahoma City: Objects in rearview mirror might be closer than they appear. Everyone has sort of lost track of the Nuggs, but they have won five straight games, including beating the aforementioned Thunder. They’re now just five back in the Northwest Division and could start to creep closer with a very east schedule over the course of the next few games. Denver has covered all four of the five games, with the one failure coming at the Rose Garden against the Blazers. The Nuggets are now an absolutely insane 20-9 ATS this season at home.
Oklahoma City Thunder: It’s a Northwest Division sweep this week, as the Thunder become the third team in the division that are scorching hot. The team has won and covered four of its last five, and yes, the one loss came in Denver to the Nuggets. Few are talking about how well G Russell Westbrook has played this season and of late, but it is worth noting here. He had 29 points, 10 assists, and six boards against the Clippers on Sunday, and he is now averaging 23.4 points, 7.9 assists, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game on the campaign. Not bad for a man that is playing second fiddle to F Kevin Durant, eh?
Toronto Raptors: The whole F Rudy Gay honeymoon might very well be over with. Toronto’s first few games with Gay in the fold were great, but they have been disastrously bad over the course of the last five outings, going 0-5 SU and ATS. The most recent loss came at the hands of the Warriors, who put up a whopping 42 points in the final stanza to get the win. Any hopes of getting into the playoffs as that final team in the East have officially gone down the tubes, and two games on the West Coast coming up aren’t going to likely help matters any.
Charlotte Bobcats: Matters are getting a lot worse for the worst team in the NBA, and it’s tough to imagine how that could be the case. Charlotte’s loss by 17 points in Portland marked its seventh straight loss and its seventh straight game without a cover. Last year’s team that went 7-59 (.106 winning percentage) went 23-43 ATS (34.8%). This year’s team since starting off at 7-5 SU and 6-6 ATS has gone 6-42 SU (.125 winning percentage) and 14-33-1 ATS (29.8%). If we were Head Coach Mike Dunlap, we wouldn’t be buying a house in the Charlotte area any time in the near future.
Detroit Pistons: The team that started this slide for the Bobcats was Detroit, as the Pistons came to Tobacco Road and won 105-99 back on February 20th. Since that point though, the men from Motown have been laughable. They’ve been beaten in five out of six both SU and ATS, and a number of those losses have been downright brutal. Detroit was crushed 114-75 by the Spurs and 90-72 and 114-82 in two games against the Pacers in this run of bad fortunate, and things aren’t getting any better. After two home games, the team is back on the road for a long West Coast swing.
