NCAA Basketball Pick – March 6th

ACC foes will be on display on Wednesday night for another great NCAA basketball betting battle, when the Maryland Terrapins host the North Carolina Tar Heels.

North Carolina is going to be a tourney team this year unless it really collapses down the stretch of the season, something that really isn’t all that likely. The Tar Heels are a tremendous offensive team, but unlike years in the past, there really isn’t a tremendous scorer that we know could go off for 20-30 points. F James Michael McAdoo, G Reggie Bullock, and G PJ Hairston are the men that could take the game over, but this really is a club that plays as a full team. The key is going to be getting on the glass. We know that UNC is a team that can rebound the ball, as it ranks ninth in the country in rebounding at 40.1 boards per game. However, the Tar Heels also don’t shoot the ball remarkably well at 44.6 percent, and as a result, they are allowing 33.8 boards per game, ranking just 309th in the country. That’s where North Carolina can get into some trouble, especially against this Maryland team that can get to the glass as well.

The Terrapins are in some real bubble trouble. They are definitely on the wrong side of the bubble right now, and they need to get over these recent losses to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the Boston College Eagles. The only way to do that is to win at least one of these last two games (preferably both) and then do a bit of damage in the ACC Tournament next week. As we mentioned before, this is a team that can hit the boards. C Alex Len has had some big time games against some great teams in the ACC, and though his average numbers are modest at 12.0 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, he can really come up with a big time game in this one, especially if he can keep up with McAdoo. G Dezmine Wells put up 23 against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in one of his biggest games on the campaign. He is averaging 12.0 points per game as well, and he is going to have to have another big one to take down the Tar Heels.

Prediction:

North Carolina has picked up five straight wins and six straight covers, and it is really tough to not go with it in this game against the Terrapins. Maryland just feels like it has run out of gas, and the differential on the point spread with home court advantage isn’t going to be good enough. The Tar Heels don’t have many road wins this year, but this is one that they’ll get to stamp their NCAA Tournament bid once and for all. North Carolina 70 – Maryland 65
