NCAA Basketball Pick – March 12th
The Big East Tournament kicks off on the hallowed courts of Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night. The Seton Hall Pirates and the South Florida Bulls will look to beat the college basketball odds for the first time on the long road in the Big East Tournament.
The Pirates were a frustrating team to watch all year long. They came into conference play hoping for some good results after a 12-2 start to the season, but we all knew better. This was never a team that was competing this season, and the non-conference schedule proved to be paper thin (the best wins came against LIU Brooklyn, Stony Brook, and Norfolk State). After winning right at the outset of the conference campaign on the road at the DePaul Blue Demons, the Hall went just 2-15 the rest of the way, and it never won a game away from home for the rest of the year. There really haven’t been a heck of a lot of close road games either, though at least Seton Hall pushed the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and the St. John’s Red Storm to the brink. There really isn’t a heck of a lot of experience on this team, though the top three players, G Fuquan Edwin and G Aaron Cosby have some games here at MSG under their belt. C Gene Teague might be the key man to watch, knowing that he is averaging 11.0 points and 7.1 boards per game.
The Bulls have had some magical runs at Madison Square Garden in the past, but this time around, they are overmatched by just about everyone in the field. The good news for Head Coach Stan Heath is that his team is playing hard at the right time of year. USF went on the road and had the Cincinnati Bearcats dead to rights on Saturday, and had that game been won, it would have been the third straight ‘W’ going into the Big East Tournament. We’ve seen stranger things happen, though it isn’t likely that we are still talking about the boys from the Sunshine State by Thursday. Offensively, this team is just flat out bad. South Florida is averaging 59.3 points per game this year, and no one that is qualified is shooting better than 41.7 percent from the floor. F Victor Rudd is averaging 12.3 points per game, but no one else on the team is good for more than 10.0 points per night.
Prediction:
Seton Hall is probably the more talented of these two teams, but it’s hard to not like the way that the Bulls are playing at the moment. This will be a tight spread for sure, just as it was when these two teams met the first time on the season. The Bulls lost that one by eight, but we think that they are going to get the ‘W’ in this one to kick off the Big East Tournament. South Florida 61 – Seton Hall 56
