NCAA Basketball Pick – March 21st
The darlings of the 2010 and 2011 NCAA Tournaments are going to be back in action to start off here in Lexington, as the Butler Bulldogs hope to fend off a trendy upset pick, the Bucknell Bison.
The Bison finished out the year at 28-5 in the Patriot League, and many wonder out loud whether they would have gotten into the NCAA Tournament even had they lost in their conference final, making the Patriot League a two-bid conference. We’ll never know at this point, but the debate would have been interesting for sure. This is a team that has the ability to play some really stifling defense, allowing just 57.5 points per game. C Mike Muscala is right in the middle of it all. The big man is going to be one of the best players on the court regardless of what the situation is that Bucknell runs into. He is averaging a double-double per game with 19.0 points, 11.2 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game. The problem though, is that the guards aren’t particularly remarkable, and often times, distributing the basketball after it gets to Muscala is a bit of a hassle. The good news is that Bucknell just doesn’t turn the ball over at all. The Bison average just 9.3 turnovers per game. If G Cameron Ayers can handle the rock with ease and hit some long range shots, there is a good chance for the upset.
The bad news for Bucknell is that this is the first time in quite some time that it is going to be going up against a team that can throw not just one, but two bodies at Muscala and know that they aren’t going to get overmatched that badly. C Andrew Smith has the height, and F Roosevelt Jones has the muscle to keep Muscala down, though both have battled foul trouble at times this season. If they can stay out of foul trouble, this could be a very easy game for the Bulldogs. G Rotnei Clarke is an SEC transfer from Arkansas, and the fifth year senior really knows how to shoot the rock. Clarke hit 108 three-pointers this year for Head Coach Brad Stevens’ team, and the club is only going to go as far as he can carry it. Three point shooting though, remains a concern outside of Clarke. The rest of the team shot below 30% from long range this year, and that isn’t going to cut it to beat a good team like Bucknell.
We think that this is going to be one of those games that comes right down to the wire that could legitimately go either way. The Bison have the shooters to knock down the shots, but the key to the game is going to Muscala. If he is throwing his weight around in the paint and is knocking off Butler bigs left and right, this will be an upset. Even if he doesn’t though, we want the points on our side. This should be a great game where either team could advance. Butler 66 – Bucknell 65
