The College football season is still months away from kicking off, but the football community is abuzz with the recent improvements that teams made on National Signing Day. Although the Alabama Crimson Tide was the top team as far as signings goes there are plenty of other teams that made some considerable news.
The early look at college football rankings are not surprising. Defending champ Florida State is No. 1, followed by Alabama and Oregon. And then, leading the way for the Big Ten, is Michigan State at No. 4. The Spartans checked in at No. 5 in the original rankings that were posted, but they have moved up a notch due to Signing Day.
The top five in the college football rankings mirror the top five in the odds to win the college football championship. Florida State is the favorite to win it all at +350, followed by Alabama at +650. This is unlikely to change leading up to kickoff but spring practices and potential injuries could change everything.
The latest signing period showed just how strong the Noles are. The defending BCS national champions added another top-five recruiting class to their already impressive roster, signing 13 players from the ESPN 300. FSU coach Jimbo Fisher added a couple of offensive weapons who might help reigning Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston this coming season, including Dalvin Cook, the No. 3-ranked running back in the country, according to ESPN RecruitingNation, and wide receivers Ermon Lane and Travis Rudolph. This will keep the championship core together and make them a threat to run the table and win another championship this year.
If you are looking for an underdog who could steal the show look at the Big Ten and the Michigan State Spartans. MSU coach Mark Dantonio continued to build his team through the trenches by also signing juco offensive tackle David Hedelin, No. 4 center Brian Allen and No. 32 defensive tackle Enoch Smith Jr. No. 30 athlete Montae Nicholson and No. 1 fullback Gerald Owens were the top skill players who signed with the Spartans. This team got stringer in the key positions and they have great odds at (+2000) to win the National Championship.
The Buckeyes and coach Urban Meyer also had success on signing players. Meyer concentrated on improving OSU’s defense and building depth on its offensive line while landing another top-10 recruiting class. The Buckeyes are at (+1200) to win the college football championship. These teams are all aiming for the best team in college football and this could be the season that they finally get them. The Noles will have to be at their best if they hope to take home another crystal tootball.
