2014 IndyCar Preview – Odds to win The Indianapolis 500

IndyCar may have lost much of its prestige in the United States, as Americans as a whole prefer NASCAR, but the Indianapolis 500 remains the most-well known car race in America. Thirty-three drivers will take to the starting line at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the 98th running of the famed event.

Bovada offers odds on each of the 33 drivers, along with a good variety of head-to-head matchups, as well as the ability to wager on a driver finishing in the top three.

Indy 500 odds PreviewAnother Andretti is expected to do well at the Brickyard on Sunday, as Marco Andretti is one of the two co-race favorites at 13-to-2, along with three-time winner Helio Castroneves. Right behind those two are pole sitter Ed Carpenter and Juan Pablo Montoya at 15-to-2.

Current IndyCar points leader Will Power is 8-to-1, followed by James Hinchcliffe at 9-to-1 and Scott Dixon and Ryan Hunter-Reay are both 11-to-1. Carlos Munoz is 14-to-1 and Simpn Pagenaud, who won the Grand Prix of Indianapolis on May 10, is 16-to-1, along with defending champion Tony Kanaan.

Ryan Briscoe is 22-to-1 and Kurt Busch, who will compete in both the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte on the same day. All other drivers are 40-to-1 or greater.

An Andretti hasn’t won the race since Mario Andretti took the checkered flag in 1969, but Marco is more than capable of winning this race. He has four top-four finishes here since 2006 and his teammate Hunter-Reay edged him out for third place last year. Hinchcliffe and Munoz, last year’s runner-up also drive for Andretti Autosport, as will Busch.

Castroneves is seeking his fourth win, which would tie him for the all-time best record. Kanaan, a childhood friend of Castroneves, is seeking to become the first person to win back-to-back races since Castroneves pulled off the feat in 2001 and 2002.

There are plenty of drivers capable of winning the race, but the most interesting could by Hunter-Reay, who nearly pulled off the victory last year, before being jumped on a restart by both Kanaan and Munoz with three laps to go. He didn’t have the greatest qualifying run and will start 19th, but has looked decent in practice and has always been more of a game-day type of driver. At odds of 11-to-1, he’s certainly worth a small shot.

At 9-to-2, Kanaan may be worth a small wager to finish in the top three. He is with a much stronger team this year, Target Chip Ganassi Racing, and one of his greatest strengths is restarts. The fact that he led laps in each of his previous nine races here is a good sign that he can keep up with the frontrunners and the odds aren’t bad at all.
