The San Francisco 49ers beat the Green Bay Packers in the season opener, but they have dropped two straight games and have been dominated in both of those contests. The St. Louis Rams edged out a victory in week one over the Cardinals, but the Rams have fallen short in their last two contests as well. This is an important game for both teams. Let’s take a look at this featured Thursday Night game.
After the first game of the year, many people had the 49ers at the top of the NFL power rankings. There was a lot of talk about how great Colin Kaepernick is and how he could become one of the best ever. Two weeks later, the 49ers have been humbled by the Seahawks on the road and the Colts at home. The loss to the Seahawks in Seattle isn’t embarrassing, but their loss this past weekend to the Colts has to be a concern for fans. Kaepernick and this team clearly have a very high upside, but they aren’t where they need to be yet.
The biggest surprise so far this year for the 49ers has to be their offense struggling in a big way. San Francisco is averaging only 318.3 yards per game, which is 27th best in the NFL. The 49ers are averaging just 14.7 points per game. Frank Gore and the running game need to get going in the weeks ahead. The 49ers defense has also been struggling against the run. San Francisco has been giving up 138 yards per game on the ground. This defense isn’t quite as good as they used to be.
St. Louis won their season opener at home, but they dropped two straight games on the road. The Rams are a much better team at home, and they will have a very good home field advantage in this one. Looking for the Rams primary problem this season? Look no further than the fact that the Rams leading rusher has 98 rushing yards through three games. That simply isn’t going to get it done. This team misses Steven Jackson a lot, and the lack of a good running back is putting more pressure on Sam Bradford.
Bradford is completing 62.4% of his passes this year, and he has six touchdowns and just two interceptions. Bradford did struggle this past weekend in Dallas. He did complete 60% of his passes last year, but he averaged just five yards per attempt last week. The Rams are going to have to get the ball downfield a little more often. Defensively, the Rams have a very good pass rush, but the rest of their defense is questionable. They’ll definitely be bringing the heat on Thursday night in attempt to get to Kaepernick. The Rams are giving up 28.7 points per game so far this season.
Free Pick: Rams +3
The Rams tied the 49ers once last year, and they won by three in overtime in the other matchup. Grabbing the points here seems like the wise decision when both games between these two went into overtime last season. I like the underdog here.
