Pointspread: San Francisco -5.5
Total Line: 47
The 49ers are a solid playoff team in the NFC at 6-4 straight-up, but a two-game losing streak has put a major dent in their plans for a third-straight NFC West Division title with Seattle sitting in the lead at 10-1. Last Sunday they lost to New Orleans 23-20 on a last second field goal as 3.5-point road underdogs after coming up just short in a 10-9 loss to Carolina the week before as six-point home favorites. San Francisco has still been a great team to bet on with a 6-1 record against the spread in its last seven games. The total has stayed UNDER in their last two games.
Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers’ passing game has struggled to move the ball through the air with an average of just 168 yards a game, but the ground game has helped fill the void with 141 yards a game. Through it all, San Francisco’s defense remains the primary strength of this team. It is ranked seventh in the NFL in total yards allowed (323.8) and fourth in points allowed (17.8).
Washington is probably just one more loss away from dropping out of the playoff race after last Sunday’s 24-16 setback to Philadelphia as a 4.5-point road underdog dropped it to 3-7 SU on the year. The Redskins have now failed to cover in three of their last four games and they are 3-7 ATS as well. The total stayed UNDER the 54.5-point line in the loss to the Eagles after going OVER in their previous four games.
This could be a make or break game for second-year quarterback Robert Griffin III. He appears to be in danger of losing this team with his inconsistent play on the field and certain off field comments that tend to imply that these inconsistencies are not really his fault. Last week he took the first half off against the Eagles, but rallied his team to within eight points with two second half scores. The rally ended when he was picked off in the end zone on an ill-advised throw. Washington’s real issues could be with a defense that is ranked 28th in the NFL in total yards allowed (389.9) and 30th in points allowed (31.1).
Free NFL Pick
This could be considered a must-win for both of these teams so when it comes down to which one has the edge it clearly swings towards San Francisco. The 49ers could have easily won its last two games, but the Redskins look like a team that is on the verge of a posting an extended losing streak.
