NCAA Football – Week 13
The final weekend of the college football betting campaign for a lot of teams kicks off this week at the Glass Bowl, where the Akron Zips will look to end a dismal season on a high note at the expense of the Toledo Rockets.
Akron might be just a 1-10 team this year, but the squad has taken a number of steps in the right direction as well. The Zips were beaten by the Massachusetts Minutemen a week and a half ago, and that really was a game that they should have won. Aside from that though, they can rest easily knowing that they stuck around with teams like the Tennessee Volunteers, Miami Redhawks, Bowling Green Falcons, Kent State Golden Flashes, and Ohio Bobcats this year. A wide open offense has really made a big difference from last year’s anemic club. QB Dalton Williams has thrown for 3,335 yards and 25 TDs this year. Yes, he has 16 picks as well, but at least the team has put a scare in some opponents. RB Jawon Chisholm has 906 yards and four scores on the ground as well, helping a short passing game out quite a bit. The defense is still in some real need of work though, and that’s what Head Coach Terry Bowden and the crew are going to be working on in recruiting in the offseason.
Meanwhile, Toledo has really fallen apart over the course of the last few weeks. The team was ranked in the Top 25 in the land after beating the Cincinnati Bearcats and the Buffalo Bulls to get to 8-1, but since that point, they have been taken out of the MAC title race thanks to losses to the Ball State Cardinals and Northern Illinois Huskies. The defense put together a yeoman’s effort against NIU last week, losing 31-24 in a game that was really close the whole way. However, this defense has been tested all year long, and this isn’t likely to change this week either. The offense was one of the most explosive in the country as well until the last four weeks. The team had scored an average of over 38 points per game to that point, but the Rockets haven’t picked up more than 29 in a game since then. RB David Fluellen is still trying to be the top running back in the country, but he is going to need a huge effort in this one to have a chance. Fluellen has rushed for 1,456 yards and 13 TDs this year.
The Rockets are the better of these two teams, but this is a heck of a lot of points to be giving the Zips. They won’t win it, and they probably won’t come close, but they should be able to stick in front of this number. Toledo 38 – Akron 24
