The Los Angeles Angels took game one of the latest edition of the Battle of LA Friday night at Dodger Stadium. So the Halos will be looking to continue their recent success against their SoCal interleague counterparts when the teams meet for the middle game of this series Saturday afternoon at Chavez Ravine (4:10 pm Eastern, Fox).
The Angels recovered after an iffy start Friday night to beat the Dodgers 8-3 for their fourth victory in their last five games. The Halos fell behind early on a Matt Kemp homer and had four baserunners thrown out on the basepaths. But they got a run in the second, three in the fifth to take the lead, another in the sixth, and two more in the eight to ice down the win.
So the Angels, at a game under .500, sit in third place in the AL West, three games back of division-leading Texas.
The Dodgers are now 18-23 at home this season, while the Angels are 23-19 on the road.
Tyler Chatwood (4-4, 3.84) will start Saturday for the Halos against Hiroki Kuroda (5-8, 3.07) for the Dodgers.
In his most recent outing Chatwood held the Mets scoreless for seven innings last Sunday. But that followed up two starts in which he gave up nine earned runs on 14 hits in 10 2/3 innings of work. Chatwood, a rookie, has never started vs. the Dodgers.
Kuroda has strung together four straight quality starts, allowing five ER on 20 hits and nine walks in 24 2/3 IP. But he hasn’t gotten a win since beating Milwaukee back on May 17. The main reason for Kuroda’s record is that he ranks right near the bottom in run support this season, as the Dodgers have scored a total of 20 runs in his last 10 starts.
Kuroda has started once in his career against the Angels, but that was back in 2008.
The over/unders are 31-40 in Angels games this season, 40-30 in Dodgers games, and 18-18 in games played at Dodger Stadium, which are averaging 7.2 runs per game, seventh-fewest among Major League ballparks.
Last year the Angels took the season interleague series from the Dodgers five games to one. Four of those games played over the posted totals.
