NFL Pick – Week 11
After four weeks, both of these teams were unbeaten. Since then, these two teams have gone in very different directions. The Arizona Cardinals have lost five straight games, and they now sit at 4-5 on the season. Atlanta was unbeaten until last week’s tough 31-27 loss at New Orleans. The Falcons will look to return to their winning ways as they return home for this one. Arizona is just looking to get off the mat. Let’s take a look at this NFC matchup.
Arizona was the talk of the league after a 4-0 start, but they haven’t been able to get a win ever since. The Cardinals have had Jon Skelton under center of late because Kevin Kolb is injured. Skelton hasn’t been able to get into a rhythm at the quarterback spot. He has just two touchdown passes on the year. He has a 65.8 quarterback rating. It doesn’t help that Arizona has virtually no running game. Beanie Wells and Ryan Williams are both hurt, and LaRod Stephens-Howling is averaging less than three yards per carry.
The Cardinals defense is still very good, and they have been able to keep the team in most of their games this season. Arizona ranks second in the league in pass defense. Patrick Peterson is quickly becoming one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. Arizona has several guys who can really get after the opposing quarterback, and that takes pressure off the secondary as well. Overall, the Cardinals are giving up only 19.2 points per game this year.
Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons were only one play away from keeping their unbeaten season alive, but they were unable to convert on fourth and goal last weekend. Despite outgaining the Saints, the Falcons lost a close one and fell to 8-1. Still, there’s no doubt that Atlanta would have been thrilled if you had told them before the season they would be 8-1 after nine games. Tony Gonzalez was supposed to be too old to be a go to guy at this point, but he has proven the critics wrong. Gonzalez has 61 catches to lead the team this year. Julio Jones is listed as questionable this weekend, which is certainly a concern for Falcons fans. Matt Ryan is having his best season as a pro. Ryan has a stellar 102.6 quarterback rating.
Atlanta’s defense first made their mark in a big way by picking off Peyton Manning four times in the first half of a Monday Night Football game early this year. The Falcons have forced turnovers as well as anyone in the NFL this year. This is a unit that has given up quite a bit of yardage, but opponents haven’t been able to get it into the end zone very often. Opponents are scoring 19.3 points per contest against Atlanta’s defense.
The Cardinals offense is brutally bad right now, and both of these defenses are very solid. Look for a low scoring contest all the way.
