Two teams from the Pac-12 South that badly need a win to keep their Rose Bowl hopes even remotely alive will meet in NCAA football betting action on Thursday night, as the USC Trojans take on the Arizona Wildcats.
The Wildcats are one of these teams that were expected to at least contend for the Rose Bowl this year, but things haven’t gone so well out of the blocks in the Pac-12. Arizona was beaten up by the Washington Huskies in the first Pac-12 game of the season, and after beating up three nobodies, that’s not really a good sign for the rest of the campaign. QB BJ Denker has only completed half of his passes this year, and though he can most certainly run, that’s not making up for what he isn’t doing with his arm. Head Coach Rich Rodriguez knows that he has to average more than 4.9 yards per pass attempt if his offense is going to be effective. The ground game has been great with Denker and RB Ka’Deem Carey combining for over 700 yards and 11 TDs in four games, but with a suspect defense and an offense that is awfully one-dimensional, we are all wondering aloud whether or not this is a team that can beat the best in the conference.
And then there are the Trojans, who have clearly fallen apart to the point beyond repair. Head Coach Lane Kiffin has been fired, and Ed Oregeron has taken over the team on an interim basis. We already know that Oregeron is a lame duck at this point, as there is no way that he is keeping this job going forward unless the team completely runs the table in impressive fashion. QB Cody Kessler figures to start once again in this one, but he has to gain the confidence of his new coach if he is going to maintain the job for the rest of the year. RB Tre Madden has had a good season with 583 yards in five games, but in the end, this team really needs to have RB Silas Redd back into the lineup. WR Marqise Lee suffered an ankle injury in the loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils, and he is up in the air for this game. However, we have to see more out of this defense as well, as this unit allowed 62 points two weeks ago to the Sun Devils after conceding just 44 points in the four previous games to start the season.
The Wildcats were great over the course of the last two games in this series, especially on the offensive side of the ball. If Arizona can figure out how to be even half as effective as Arizona State was two weeks ago, this is a game that is going to end in an upset. Worry about the names on the backs of the uniforms and not the names on the fronts of them.
