The biggest matchup of service academies takes place on Saturday afternoon as the Navy Midshipmen take on their arch-rival Army Black Knights at Lincoln Financial Field in what should be a snowy City of Brotherly Love.
Army enters this contest with nothing but its pride on the line. A dismal 3-8 SU season has made Army as a heavy underdog once again in this game. The Black Knights are led on the ground by RB Terry Baggett’s 1,072 yards on 130 attempts and eight touchdowns. Last week, he put up 81 yards on 14 carries in Army’s 49-42 loss at the Hawaii Warriors. The Black Knights’ rushing attack is ranked second in the country and will help them stay in this football game with Navy. Army’s 77th ranked defense is a big part of the problem this season as they’ve given up over 40 points on four occasions. The Black Knights had better hope the bad weather will help their defense stick with the Midshipmen. This four-game losing streak they are on though, suggests that there could be some problems. The team has allowed an average of 36.3 points per game in these four defeats, including when it allowed 42 points and 454 yards to a very comparable squad in the Air Force Falcons.
Navy comes into this meeting having won 11 straight games against Army dating back to 2002. The Midshipmen’s running game is led by QB Keenan Reynolds, who has 1,124 yards and 26 touchdowns. Reynolds has totaled 2,152 all-purpose yards this season, which has helped his team to a berth in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl against the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders. Navy’s defense has had its issues this year, allowing 419.6 yards per game and 27.6 points per game. There have been some positives for sure, such as a 24-21 win over the Pittsburgh Panthers and a 42-14 win over the South Alabama Jaguars two weeks ago, but for every one of those great games, there were duds as well, such as the 38 points allowed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the 35 conceded to the Indiana Hoosiers. The telling stat for this one though, might be the game against Air Force from earlier this year. The Middies allowed just 313 yards and 10 points to the Falcons, a far cry from what Army was able to accomplish later in the season against the same squad.
The Midshipmen are heavy favorites on Saturday, but with an 80 percent chance of snow expect this to be a low-scoring battle. Army fell to Navy in last year’s meeting 17-13 to cover a six-point spread. At 3-1 ATS in the last four meetings, look for Army to cover the spread and the under to ring true for an eighth consecutive time in this series.
