Game Overview

The Oakland Athletics hope to take one more step towards clinching a spot in the playoffs this year in MLB betting action when they duke it out with the Texas Rangers on Monday night.

The A’s just had a bad weekend in the Big Apple, as they lost two out of three and lost a couple games in the Wild Card standings to both the Tampa Bay Rays and the Los Angeles Angels. They still hold a comfortable three-game edge in the loss column against the Halos and four on the Rays, but this is the first of seven games against the Rangers left to play this year. That being said, Texas can still be caught for the best record in the AL if this series goes well, too, so hopes are still high in Oakland. Daniel Straily will get the ball on Monday, and it’s rare that a man with five career starts is starting this late in the season for a contender. The righty is 2-1 with a 4.13 ERA, and he has been lit up at times. He has already allowed eight homers in 28.1 innings of work, and he has a 1.34 WHIP that could be a heck of a lot higher.

Texas is just hoping to at least get three or so of these games against Oakland over the course of the rest of the regular season, and it should be celebrating an AL West title, and the road to the World Series should go through Arlington. Derek Holland is going to start off this home series, and he has been on absolute fire of late. The southpaw has now had four straight starts in which he has allowed no more than two earned runs, and he has lasted at least seven innings in all of those starts. The last truly bad game he had was in the Bronx against the New York Yankees on August 16th, and since that point, his ERA has dropped from 5.18 to where it sits now at 4.42. Holland’s splits are still pretty good, and that’s why he has an 11-6 record for the year. He has 136 strikeouts against just 46 walks, and batters are hitting just .235 against him. If that keeps up, Holland will have his spot in the postseason rotation for Manager Ron Washington.

Prediction

The Rangers should clinch up their playoff spot in this week, and if they can sweep this series, they’ll be the official AL West winners. This is a bad spot for Oakland to be in, and there is just no way that we can back in with a rookie on the mound in such a clutch spot. The AL Wild Card chase gets a bit tighter tonight. Texas 9 – Oakland 4
