Auburn and Texas A&M come into this weekend’s SEC matchup with identical 5-1 records. Auburn is ranked #24 in the nation, while the Aggies are seventh in the current polls. The Tigers have yet to beat a top team this year, but they’ll get a chance this weekend at Kyle Field. Texas A&M is still in the thick of the national title race. Let’s take a closer look at this one.
Auburn’s offense ranks seventh in the country in rushing yards per game at 287 per contest. The Tigers are 5-1 on the year, but they haven’t really settled on a quarterback. Nick Marshall and Jeremy Johnson are still battling for the starting quarterback role. Gus Malzahn is considered an offensive mastermind and he has been frustrated at times this year with the lack of production from the quarterbacks. Tre Mason leads Auburn in rushing with 515 yards and 5.6 yards per attempt so far this year. Four guys on this offense have at least 288 yards on the ground this season.
Auburn’s defense has given up quite a few yards, but they have been stingy as far as giving up points. The Tigers have effectively used the bend but don’t break defense. This unit is giving up only 18.8 points per game this year. They will get a massive test this weekend against this high-powered Texas A&M offense. Auburn better find a way to get some pressure on Johnny Manziel or this secondary is going to have a long day!
The Texas A&M Aggies only loss so far this year was their 49-42 loss at home against Alabama. The Aggies offense has been a well-oiled machine, while the defense has been the worst in the SEC. Aggies fans keep hoping that the defense will eventually step up and take a little bit of the pressure off the offense. For now, the Aggies have to keep winning games by outscoring the opponent in a shootout. Manziel’s 73% completion rate is actually better than last year’s. He leads the team in passing yards and rushing yards. Johnny Football isn’t suffering any kind of a sophomore slump. The Aggies have two very good running backs in Malena and Carson. Texas A&M is putting up 47.8 points per game so far this season. This offense came up huge last weekend at Mississippi.
The Aggies defense continues to get torched on a weekly basis, but so far the offense has generally been able to overcome their defensive woes. Eventually, this defense is going to have to come up with a key stop if this team is going to stay in the national title picture. Texas A&M ranks 114th in the nation in total defense. Can they slow down Auburn’s running game this week?
Free Pick: Over 67
This number is set high for a reason. Both teams should fly up and down the field here. Texas A&M averages almost 50 per game, and the Tigers offense should find plenty of running room. I like the over.
