#6 Francesca Schiavone
Two of the highest seeds left standing in the women’s side of Australian Open betting action square off on Tuesday morning on the hard courts of Sydney, as Francesca Schiavone looks to slay the top seed in the tourney, Caroline Wozniacki.

It’s still amazing to think that Wozniacki is the No. 1 seed in this event in spite of the fact that she still has yet to win a Grand Slam event and only has a record of 198-83 for her career. However, the Dane has clearly been hot in Grand Slam events, as this is her seventh straight trip to at least the fourth round of a major tourney, and she has been a quarterfinalist now in four of those events. The trip to the quarters has been a relatively easy one, as the only ranked player standing in the way of Wozniacki has been Dominika Cibulkova, who was easily dismissed 6-4, 6-3 in the third round. As you would figure, Wozniacki really doesn’t have many glaring stats that suggest that she could be in trouble in this one, but the fact that she only won 29 percent of her second service points in the fourth round against relatively unknown Anastasija Sevastova is certainly worth raising an eyebrow at. For a woman that only has seven aces, she had better play particularly well on second serves, or there are going to be a lot of breaks needed. Fortunately for Wozniacki, she has beaten the Australian Open odds by breaking her foes a total of 19 times in just eight sets.
Schiavone really busted onto the scene last year when she became the first Italian, either male or female, to win the French Open. That was her only Grand Slam triumph, and since that point, she has had quite the mixed bag. Schiavone was bounced from the first round in Wimbledon, but fired back with a quarterfinals appearance in the US Open. Schiavone has been living on the edge quite a bit in this tournament. She dropped her very first set to qualifier Arantxa Parra Santonja and needed to fight for three sets to top the Spaniard, and then she struggled mightily with Canadian Rebecca Marino, needing three sets, the third of which was won 9-7 to advance into the third round. Though there was a straight sets victory coming over Monica Niculescu, the fourth round provided some tremendous dramatics. Svetlana Kuznetsova pushed Schiavone to the brink, but the Italian finally triumphed 6-4, 1-6, 16-14. After a marathon match like that in the fourth round, it’s a wonder how Schiavone is going to react in the quarterfinals.
We think that the oddsmakers are giving us a gift price here on Schiavone, as she really knows what it takes to be able to win a Grand Slam event, while Wozniacki continues to find ways to come up short. This is a great spot for a big time upset, as Schiavone is beating the Australian Open odds in this match at least one out of five times for certain.
