It’s not often that we see a man like Murray in a Grand Slam final, as this is only his third chance to win a major tournament in his career. There aren’t many players on either side of this draw that can say that they have played as well as Murray has in this tournament, but in fairness, this hasn’t been all that difficult of a stretch either. Karol Beck and Illya Marchenko were absolutely no challenges in the first two matches, while Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Jurgan Melzer, both ranked foes, only could take a grand total of nine games in six sets from the Brit. Both Alexandr Dolgopolov and David Ferrer were bounced in four sets as well for Murray to get to this point. Though we know that this isn’t an ideal Grand Slam slate, there is no doubting the fact that Murray has really deserved his place in the sun Down Under. If he were to pull this one off, he would become the first Brit to win a major tournament in 75 years.
Djokovic knows what it is like to win here in the Australian Open, as he is looking for his second triumph here at Melbourne Park. No one is doubting the fact that the Serb would really have earned his Grand Slam title though, as he had to go through a real Murderer’s Row of opponents. Viktor Troicki was the first ranked foe along the way, but Djokovic got rid of him quickly before forcing him to retire. Nicolas Almagro was about as difficult of a task that Djokovic could have faced in Round 4, but he passed with flying colors at 6-3, 6-4, 6-0. Tomas Berdych fell in straight sets as well in the quarters. Unlike Murray, Djokovic had to take on the great Roger Federer. Even though he was a slight underdog in the match, the Serb really played one of the best matches of his life, knocking off the 16 time Grand Slam champ 7-6 (7-3), 7-5, 6-4. The match was very, very tight, but Djokovic made all of the shots necessary to move on to another Grand Slam finale.
It really isn’t all that often that we see a Grand Slam final without either Federer or Rafael Nadal involved in it, but that doesn’t mean that this one is going to be any less interesting. These two have played fantastic tennis in this tournament, but the man that we are going to be picking is Murray. Djokovic has already had his day, but this is the night that will belong to Great Britain.
