College Football Podcast: The ACC Preview

Our excellent preseason coverage continued at today with the latest recording of the College Football Podcast to talk about the ACC. That means that all of the power five conferences have been covered on podcasts so far this preseason. Monday’s ACC show covered all 14 teams as the Florida State Seminoles are a heavy favorite, leaving a lot of teams in the mix for bowl berths and the ACC Coastal Division title.

A discussion about the aforementioned Seminoles kicked off the show as Adam Burke and Kyle Hunter, a Expert Handicapper, discussed the lack of weaknesses on the team. With reigning Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston at quarterback, a team that excels in all areas of play, and is rated number one in both Adam and Kyle’s power ratings, the Seminoles are the class of the ACC.

There’s a lot of uncertainty after Florida State in the ACC Atlantic Division. The Clemson Tigers have to replace a lot of offensive production with Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins in the NFL. Could the Clemson Tigers win with defense this season against Wake Forest? That seems to be the belief that Adam and Kyle have as the season draws closer.

Newcomer Louisville has a chance to make an impact in the ACC right away. Will the loss of head coach Charlie Strong have an impact on the Cardinals? The guys give their thoughts on new coach Bobby Petrino. Adam also wonders if Louisville’s strength in the trenches will translate to a better conference.

Following the Clemson Tigers and Louisville Cardinals, there are some teams that will likely hover around .500, as the Syracuse Orange are in their second season under head coach Scott Shafer and the North Carolina State Wolfpack will try to improve on last season’s 3-9 in year two with Dave Doeren. One of these two teams is projected to be a major surprise team by both Adam and Kyle. Who is it? Listen to find out!

The bottom feeders in the ACC could both be in for long seasons. The Boston College Eagles lost a lot as Heisman finalist Andre Williams and his 2,177 rushing yards move on to the next level. Wide receiver Alex Amidon caught 77 of the team’s 164 completions last season. He’s also gone. Can Addazio recover?

Wake Forest is projected by both guys to be one of the worst teams in the power conferences. Should Dave Clawson have taken what appears to be a dead-end job?

Moving over to the Coastal Division, three teams have a legitimate shot to play in the ACC Championship Game. Kyle’s favorite is the North Carolina Tar Heels, who found something in Marquise Williams, a dual threat quarterback that fits head coach Larry Fedora’s system very well. There’s something that Kyle especially loves about the Tar Heels and it could be a separator for them in the Coastal. Click ‘Play’ to find out what it is!

Even though the quarterback competition is still going on in Blacksburg, the Virginia Tech Hokies have another quality secondary under Bud Foster and three straight seasons with four spread victories could create some value on the Hokies. Similarly, the Miami Hurricanes are going through a quarterback competition of their own and it’s their depth at the skill player positions that could give them a leg up over the rest of the Coastal Division.

The Pitt Panthers and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets look like .500 teams this season, but Paul Johnson’s triple-option offense was the point of an extended discussion, including a pro tip for bettors when the Yellow Jackets play the Hurricanes. Most of the teams in the ACC are flawed. Are these two teams more flawed than the others?

What should be expected of the Duke Blue Devils? The Blue Devils are coming off their best season in program history and David Cutcliffe stayed around to see the team through this period of success. The team lost their running quarterback, Brandon Connette, but a lot of talent returns. Was 2013 an anomaly? Or can the Blue Devils come up with an encore?

In the same breath as Boston College and Wake Forest, the Virginia Cavaliers are in for a long season. Mike London managed to keep his job following a 2-10 season without a conference victory. Do the guys see value in the Cavaliers this season?

On Wednesday’s show, the guys will talk about the other Division I FBS conferences and highlight some teams that bettors need to have on their radar as the season approaches.

With just one more week until the season, bettors need to make sure that they are prepared for a profitable season. It’s important to acquire any and all insight and analysis at this time of year and some of the best insight and analysis can be heard regularly on the College Football Podcast.
