The Nuggets might be a playoff caliber team, but they certainly aren’t going to have the same sort of look that they have now once Carmelo Anthony gets traded. It really doesn’t seem like a matter of if, but when this all goes down, as a trade either to the New York Knicks or the New Jersey Nets is imminent. Denver has been playing well over the course of these last three games, scoring 130 against the Miami Heat without LeBron James in the lineup, putting 132 on the Phoenix Suns, and 127 on the Cleveland Cavaliers. There’s good reason to believe that this run can keep going for as long as the offense is really on fire, as this is a Denver team that just runs up and down the court with ease whenever it feels like it. Normally, against the Spurs, this would ultimately be a bad thing because their defense would be able to thwart the efforts of a run and gun offense. However, this time around, we bet that Head Coach Gregg Popovich has the perfect panacea.
San Antonio is a tremendous favorite in this game on the NBA odds, and it is very understandable. This is a team that has won five games in a row and has covered three in a row. It already knows what it is going to take to beat these Nuggets, as they have a 109-103 victory in Denver to their credit from just four weeks ago. We mentioned just how strong the Spurs were offensively this year, and we certainly weren’t kidding. They’re averaging 104.6 points per game, ranking No. 5 in the league, and they are doing so with tremendous efficiency. They’re No. 6 in field goal percentage as a team at 46.9 percent, and they are knocking down 39.6 percent of their three point attempts, second best in the NBA. Rebounding isn’t a problem either, even though this is a squad that prides itself on its guard play this year with Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker. Tim Duncan might be at the tail end of his career, but he is still leading the team with 9.3 boards per night, and he is spearheading an effort that is averaging 43.0 rebounds per game for the men in silver and black.
There’s always one other problem when betting on Denver, and that’s that you never know when Anthony, Chauncey Billups, and goodness knows how many other players, are going to be held out of the lineup because they are about to get traded. We just can’t take that chance, especially in this type of a matchup, as San Antonio should be able to win this one by at least eight regardless of whether ‘Melo and company play or not.
