NCAA Football Betting Favorite: Baylor +9
It will be a battle of two Texas teams in the top 25 on Saturday afternoon in College Station. Texas A&M has lost two of their last three games, but this is an extremely talented team that is tough to beat at home. Baylor dropped a heartbreaker in Manhattan a couple weeks ago, but the Bears are 4-1 and looking to prove they are for real. Both offenses are stacked and both defenses are struggling. This one should be a shootout between two exciting offenses full of play makers.
Robert Griffin III is really making a name for himself this year. He is high on the Heisman Trophy lists due to his ridiculously great numbers thus far in 2011. The man they call RG3 has already thrown 19 touchdowns and just one interception so far this year. He has racked up 1,520 passing yards and 280 rushing yards. There isn’t a better dual-threat quarterback in all of football. Kendall Wright has 48 catches and eight touchdowns, and he has shown himself worthy of being called one of the best receivers in the country. Art Briles has this offense absolutely humming right now, and this is a very dangerous team. Baylor is averaging 48 points per game.
As good as the Baylor offense is, the defense is quite poor. The four FBS teams they have played this year have all scored at least 26 points. The Bears gave up 31 to a lowly Rice team, and 48 to a TCU team that isn’t an offensive powerhouse this year. The rushing defense is the unit’s biggest problem, and they must improve if Baylor hopes to stay in the top 25.
Texas A&M had two straight second-half meltdowns against Oklahoma State and Arkansas a couple weeks ago. The Aggies did bounce back and win a close game against Texas Tech, but the collapses raised plenty of questions about this team’s mental toughness. Ryan Tannehill is completing 67% of his passes for this offense, but he has been turning the ball over too often. The running attack is very good thanks to a tailback tandem of Cyrus Gray and Christine Michael. Expect both of them to get a lot of carries this week against Baylor’s weak front seven.
The Aggies defense is ranked seventh in the nation when it comes to stopping the run. On the other hand, Texas A&M is ranked dead last in all of college football when it comes to pass defense. The Aggies are giving up 348 yards through the air each game. In the last three games, Texas A&M has given up 112 points.
Griffin III is a terrific player and I think he’ll give the Aggies defense fits in this one. Texas A&M may well win this game, but I don’t think they should be favored by nine points.
