It’s not all that often that we see the Boise State Broncos as underdogs on the college football odds, but in this case, they are going into a huge primetime fight on Friday night against the BYU Cougars in Provo as the pups according to the oddsmakers.

Head Coach Chris Petersen deserves a lot of credit for what he has done with this program over the years, but it is clear that this is a down season for Boise State. The Broncos have already been beaten twice, and they have no way of getting into the BCS this year, and that’s sort of the measuring stick for what this team is all about. The only real goal that is left is that of the Mountain West title, and this game has no bearing on that whatsoever, knowing that the Cougs are now an independent outfit. The offense for Boise State though, has looked a lot more Boise State-esque of late, as the team has dropped at least 34 points in every game since only scoring six against the Washington Huskies to start off the season. QB Joe Southwick is having a decent statistical season, throwing for 1,589 yards and 11 TDs against five picks, and he is completing over 75% of his passes since that opening week flub in Seattle. The offense though, only goes as far as RB Jay Ajayi takes it. He has 766 rushing yards and 12 scores on the season, and he is certainly the MVP of the team running behind an offensive line that is one of the best in the Mountain West.

This BYU team though, might legitimately be thinking about the BCS. Sure, there are losses to the Virginia Cavaliers and the Utah Utes (though the loss to Utah is looking better and better as time goes on), but since that point, there are four straight wins. The Cougars already have victories over the Texas Longhorns, Utah State Aggies, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and Houston Cougars, and if the team can win out, there will be wins over these Broncos, the Wisconsin Badgers, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish as well. It would be tough to keep a 10-2 BYU team out of the BCS for sure. QB Taysom Hill isn’t the best passer in the world, but he is really turning into one of the truly great players in college football this year. Hill has thrown for 1,680 yards, but his real threat is with his legs. He has 772 yards and seven TDs, and between he and RB Jamaal Williams, they have almost 1,400 rushing yards in seven games. If these two are ripping off 200+ yards a game, the Cougars are really tough to tame.

This game is going to be a coming out party for the Cougars. They have the better of the two teams in this game, and they are going to prove it on national television on Friday night. Hill should have a fine day, accounting for at least 300 total yards, as the Cougs wreck the Broncos and take a big step towards getting back in the Top 25.
