The B’s watched their three-game winning streak come to a close on Thursday night when they were beaten in a shootout by the Washington Capitals at the TD Garden. They have a heck of a weekend in front of them with back to back games against the Isles and the New York Rangers, but the truth of the matter is that there really isn’t a heck of a lot to look forward to. Barring a collapse of epic proportions, Boston is going to win the Northeast Division, and though the Florida Panthers, the Southeast Division leaders, are just four points back, there really isn’t all that much difference between the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds. The good news is that the Bruins are playing well in net. They have allowed just two goals in four straight games, and they haven’t conceded more than those two goals in seven straight after allowing 17 goals in a span of three games on the road in the middle of March. We know that Tuukka Rask is still out of the fold with a groin injury, and Tim Thomas is still getting the job done in net.
The Islanders are actually playing good hockey right now, scoring three straight wins, two of which came against the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are going to likely be the No. 4 seed in the playoffs. New York has scored three goals or more in six straight games, winning five of the six. That being said, it is nice for this team to know that it hasn’t been eliminated from the playoffs quite yet, and though it remains a mathematical possibility, we know that it is only a matter of time until the Islanders get that ‘E’ next to their name. John Tavares has come on strong this year, and he is going to be leading a very young team into the offseason. He has 31 goals and 44 assists this year, and he and Matt Moulson who also is in the 30-30 club with 34 goals and 30 assists, are the future of this team. It is great to see the Islanders playing so well after years of misery, and they are going to love to play the role of spoiler against some of the best teams in the league for the rest of the year.
Boston Bruins @ New York Islanders Pick: Why not, right? The Isles have nothing to worry about in this one, and they are playing loose hockey and playing it well. There has to be some excitement about hockey in Long Island for the first time in quite some time. Boston knows that this game isn’t the end of the world, and we think that it will be beaten handily on Saturday.
Free Hockey Pick: New York Islanders
