2014-15 NHL Betting: Boston Bruins outlook

The Boston Bruins open the season as they seemingly always do lately — favored to take the Atlantic Division, favored to represent the East in the Finals, and favored to take home the Stanley Cup.
They did, however, take a hit as the preseason came to an end, when they got the news that Johnny Boychuk was traded to the NY Islanders for essentially three draft picks (two second round draft picks and a conditional 2015 third round pick). They continued their recent tradition of leaving town after their final preseason game to come together and relax a bit as the long season gets closer, but the talk was still about Boychuk’s departure.

Besides losing Boychuk, the only other real roster change was Jarome Iginla’s move to Colorado, who only won a single preseason game as they prepare for 2014-15 season.

2013-14 Team Betting Recap/Stats

Record: 54 – 19 – 9 (117 Pts)

Offense: 3.15 GPG (3rd)
Defense: 2.08 GAA

Power Play: 21.7% (3rd)

Penalty Kill: 83.6% (8th)

The Bruins were favored in 72 of the 82 regular season games last year, and all 12 playoff games as well.
With a team who led the Eastern Conference in Wins, Points, Goals For, Goals Against, and the best home and road records, betting on the Bruins was not as easy a proposition as you might think. If you leave out the straight 5s that pushed, they were only 44 – 38 ATS and 33/28 O/U.

Boston Bruins 2014-15 Overview

What to expect? Well according to Las Vegas, just hand them the title now, there is no need to even play it out. The best in the Atlantic, the best in the East and the best in the league is all Vegas is trying to tell you. However, we know that may not be the case. They were in this same position last year, so ask the Montreal Habs what they thought of those predictions. Boston was up 3 – 2 with Montreal headed to the Conference Finals after going down 1 – 2 and didn’t even make the final four.

There are two ways to look at being favored to win everything hockey has to offer. There is no overachieving. You’ve already been acclaimed as the team to beat and the best team on the planet. You are also guaranteed to get everyone wanting to take you down and prove that being favored means nothing to anyone who cares about it.

Boston had a very mediocre preseason, giving up plenty of goals along the way, but we all know that will not be anything to take much stock in when the bell rings on Oct. 8.

They’ve proven they can win and Claude Julien knows how to keep his veterans wanting more and never becoming complacent, but this is also an aging team. Milan Lucic is just now getting his legs under him after surgery in the off-season. Greg Campbell is still working his way back from a core injury, and with 11 guys 28 or older, the time is certainly now to get back to the Finals, when you don’t know how many opportunities you will have left.
