Boston College Eagles
(2-3, 0-5 ATS)
Florida State Seminoles
(5-1, 5-1 ATS)
ACC rivals collide at Doak Campbell Stadium, as the Boston College Eagles attempt to get their first victory against the NCAA football spreads this year on Saturday afternoon against the Florida State Seminoles.
The Eagles have an offense that is legitimately horrible. With QB David Shinskie and QB Mike Marscovetra struggling mightily, the quarterback carousel returns to QB Chase Rettig, a true freshman that was originally intended to be redshirted this season. Rettig played sparingly two weeks ago before getting injured and forced to leave the game. He threw for 72 yards and a TD against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. BC hasn’t scored more than 17 points in a game since September 11th against the Kent State Golden Flashes and hasn’t scored more than 20 against a team from a power conference (including Notre Dame) since October 17th of last year… a stretch of eight straight games. It’s no surprise that the Eagles are winless ATS in their L/9. To make matters worse for Boston College, RB Montel Harris has really been grounded this year with just 387 yards on 96 carries. He has the team’s only rushing touchdown on the year as well, and that came way back in Week 1 against the Weber State Wildcats. Since the start of October, Harris only has 81 yards on 29 carries in two miserable defeats to the Golden Domers and the NC State Wolfpack.
Everything is rolling right now for FSU. The garnet and gold just absolutely destroyed their instate rivals, the Miami Hurricanes last Saturday, and they added another big time piece of turf to their graveyard in Tallahassee. The difference between this season and those in recent memory is the fact that the defense is getting after opposing quarterbacks. Even if the sacks aren’t there, QBs are getting knocked around like it’s no one’s business; just ask Miami’s QB Jacory Harris how he likes standing in the pocket against this pass rush. A unit that allowed over 400 yards per game last season is suddenly only conceding 315.2 yards and 15.7 points per game. In three ACC games this year, the Noles have beaten their foes by a combined score of 110-31, and they have three covers to show for it. The ground game can be thanked quite a bit as well. Though none of the three big rushers has had a remarkable individual year, the fact that RB Chris Thompson, RB Jermaine Thomas, and RB Ty Jones have combined for 1,090 yards and 12 scores on the ground is even more proof that this is a program that is back on the rise again in the first year of the HC Jimbo Fisher era.
Simply put, Florida State is dominant right now and Boston College is dreadful. Here’s a little known tidbit about the Noles. BC is the only team in the ACC that they have never beaten at home. The Eagles have only played in Tallahassee twice and have won both times. With the NCAA football odds stacked against the visitors in this one, there’s no way that that streak continues on Saturday afternoon. BC will cover a game eventually, but this won’t be the one. Expect to see at least a four score game.
