Phillip Humber made history when he became the 21st pitcher ever to throw a Perfect Game last Saturday in Seattle. The White Sox are off to a surprisingly solid start. Boston is coming off a nice sweep at Minnesota, but the Red Sox are still just 7-10 on the season. It’s the battle of the Red Sox and the White Sox on the south side. This is the first of a four-game set.
The Red Sox built a big lead before holding on to win 7-6 last night in Minnesota. Boston’s offense is performing at an extremely high level right now. Boston has scored 33 runs in their last four games. They’ll have to find a way to get to Humber in this one. The Red Sox outfield is without Ellsbury and Crawford, but some unsung heroes have been stepping up over the last couple weeks. Cody Ross is red hot right now, and Ryan Sweeney has been a great clutch hitter for the team.
David Ortiz was thought to be a player who had passed his prime, but he has been the team’s best hitter so far this year. Ortiz is hitting .424 with three home runs and 15 RBI’s. Boston’s starting staff is weak right now, and they are severely short-handed due to injuries. Felix Doubront has been pretty good so far this year. Can the youngster keep it up over the long run?
The White Sox lost a heart breaker in the 14th inning against Oakland yesterday. It was the White Sox base running blunders that cost them the win. Robin Ventura’s team wasn’t expected to do much this year, but they are getting solid contributions from guys who were terrible last year. Alex Rios leads the team with a .362 average. He hit .227 in 2011. Adam Dunn had a miserable 2011, but he has 4 homers and 14 RBI’s already this year. Gordon Beckham and Alexei Ramirez are two guys that the team needs to get better production from.
Humber has faced two relatively poor teams in his first two starts, but he’ll face a great offense in this one. The closer spot is a big question mark for this team right now. Hector Santiago imploded in the 14th inning yesterday, and he has already blown two saves this year.
The Red Sox are just 3-11 in their last 14 meetings with the White Sox. On the other hand, the White Sox are just 1-7 in Humber’s last 8 home starts. The over is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams. Both offenses should score some runs here.
