The Oakland Athletics rallied with two runs in the bottom of the ninth last night to defeat the Boston Red Sox. Oakland dominated the series opener on Monday night, so they’ll be looking to complete a three-game sweep Wednesday afternoon. MLB Network will have coverage of this Independence Day matinee showdown.

The Boston Red Sox have been one of the streakiest teams in baseball this season. They started slowly before making a big charge over the last month, but they have looked very shaky on the West Coast this past week. Franklin Morales has only started three games so far this year for the Red Sox, but he has done a nice job thus far. Morales is 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA in those three starts. The Red Sox only have 38 quality starts this year, and the pitching staff has a mediocre 4.15 ERA.

Boston has managed to pile up the runs this year despite being extremely short-handed offensively. David Ortiz leads the team with 21 homers and a .301 batting average. After a couple down seasons in 2009 and 2010, Ortiz has been great the last two years. Adrian Gonzalez pushed his hitting streak to 15 games with 2 more hits last night. Gonzalez started the season slowly, but he is too good of a hitter to stay down all season long. The Red Sox are averaging 5.05 runs per game in 2012.

Oakland was expected to be one of the worst teams in the majors this year, but the team has played scrappy baseball and stayed close to the .500 mark. The Athletics are now 21-19 at home this year. This is a team that is dead last in the majors in batting average, but they have found a way to win 40 games already in 2012. Josh Reddick has been a big catalyst for the team. Reddick was brought in from the Red Sox in the offseason, and he leads the team with 19 homers and 41 RBI’s. Yoenis Cespedes has been injured quite a bit this year, but he looks like a future star.

A.J. Griffin has made just two major league starts in his career, and both of them have been terrific. He has allowed only 5 hits in 12 innings pitched. In his last outing, he shut down the mighty Texas Rangers offense. Griffin is one of the highest ranked pitching prospects in all of baseball.

MLB Free Pick: Over 7.5

Both pitchers have limited experience, and the ball flies much better during the day in Oakland. I like the value on the over in this one.
