NBA – December 19th
Arch rivals from the Empire State meet for the third time this year, as the New York Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets go to battle on the NBA betting odds.
The Nets weren’t quite a whole team when they took on New York last week. C Brook Lopez missed that game, and as a result, they allowed 10 offensive rebounds and blocked just three shots. Lopez is back though, and he is proving to be a real force on the defensive side of the court. The Stanford Cardinal has averaged 2.67 blocks and 1.0 steals per game in his last three making up for the fact that his scoring (14.3 PPG) and rebounding (6.3 RPG) has tailed off just a tad. Still, there has to be a real concern if you’re a Brooklyn fan right now. The team has lost two in a row and seven out of nine both SU and ATS, and there are three straight games coming up against divisional foes. The Knicks are already five in front of the Nets, and a loss in this one would really sink them for the time being. Brooklyn’s offense is still struggling mightily and is down to just 95.7 points per game this year, and that’s something that Head Coach Avery Johnson would love to see improve.
The Knicks were beaten by the Houston Rockets the last time out, but that happened with F Carmelo Anthony out of the lineup. It was the second straight game that New York failed to cover without its star. Melo might be back in the fold for this one, but he is the epitome of a game-time decision. We know that F Amare Stoudemire is practicing, but he is at least a week away from making his season debut as well. None of that stopped the Knicks from running against Houston two nights ago though, as they put up 90 field goal attempts in the 48 minutes. That’s just an insane number of shots for a 48-minute game, but it isn’t all that much of a shock when push comes to shove with a team that loves to run under Head Coach Mike Woodson. Remember that prior to the 109-96 defeat to Houston, New York had scored at least 100 points in each of its last four games.
This is a heck of a lot of points to be giving the Nets right now. Brooklyn is a solid defensive club, and it has to be playing with a bit of a sense of desperation. The Nets have covered both games in this series this year. Check back a little later on the status of Anthony, but if he is out of the fold, be sure to take the points. Either way, we still like the Nets, but we love them if Melo isn’t dressing. Brooklyn 99 – New York 93
