An Atlantic Division battle will be showcased on Wednesday when the Montreal Canadiens will host the Boston Bruins on NBC Sports Network at 7:30 p.m. ET on the ice inside Bell Centre.
The Bruins dominated the Florida Panthers on Sunday night as they got a 5-2 win in the Sunshine State. It was the fifth win in a row for this team that has been on fire all season long. The game was tied at one apiece going to the third period before Boston scored four times to secure the victory in the final stanza. It was the power play that really got going as the unit put up two goals on four chances with the man advantage. The offense ranks No. 4 in the league as it scores 3.2 goals per game this season. Boston has scored at least three goals in every game during its current five game win streak. When C Patrice Bergeron is on the ice good things happen for the Bruins as he is +30 in +/- numbers this season. Bergeron has scored 18 goals and dished out 25 assists as his team’s fifth highest point scorer. Bruins RW Jarome Iginla is also having an outstanding season having lit the lamp 20 times on the year. This team will get bettors to the ‘over’ having cashed it six times in their L/8 games.
The Canadiens trail the Bruins by 12 points in the Atlantic Division standings entering this game. They have lost their last two games including a 4-0 shutout loss to the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. This will be the first contest Montreal has played since it returned from a four game west coast road trip in which the only victory was a 4-3 shootout win over the Anaheim Ducks. Canadiens LW Max Pacioretty has 30 goals and 13 assists to lead the offensive attack. Pacioretty has four goals and two assists in the seven games since returning from the Olympic break including a two goal game in a March 1st win over the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 in a shootout. A key in this game could be the Canadiens’ ability to stop a Bruins power play that is extremely potent. Montreal’s penalty killers rank No. 4 in the league getting rid of 84.6 of the extra man chances it gives up. If the Canadiens can shut down this Bruins offense, they will have a fighting chance to get the win at home where they hold an 18-10-5 SU record thus far.
The Bruins are extremely hot right now and are riding an offense that is putting up goals seemingly at will. It will take a lot for Montreal to be able to compete in this game, but we expect this to be quite a battle north of the border. Look for the Bruins to do just enough to get the win on the road where they are 17-10-3 SU on the year. Boston has won its L/3 road games and will continue that streak in this contest with Montreal.
