The Boston Bruins and the Pittsburgh Penguins both have now had at least a week off, and now, they have to get back on the ice in NHL betting action for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals this weekend at Consol Energy Arena.
The Bruins have played fantastic hockey here in the playoffs, and if you take away two real dud games in a row against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the argument could be made that they look the part of a Stanley Cup contender for the second time in three seasons. Boston has gotten great play out of G Tuukka Rask here in the second season. His numbers aren’t quite as good as those of G Tim Thomas two seasons ago when the B’s won the Cup, but there is no shame in a 2.22 GAA and a .928 save percentage. The offense has had plenty of stars step up to the plate. C David Krejci leads the team with 17points, and he is one of the two on the team, joining his line mate, RW Nathan Horton who have five goals to pace the club. D Torey Krug had a great series against the New York Rangers, scoring four goals in five games, while D Johnny Boychuk also has four goals here in the playoffs. The hope is that D Andrew Ference and D Wade Redden, who both sat out the whole series against New York, could be back in the fold for Game 1 against the Pens.
Pittsburgh messed around with the New York Islanders just a bit in the opening round of the playoffs, but it made no mistakes in dismissing the Ottawa Senators. The Sens knew that they were overmatched right from the get go, and though the Penguins did ultimately lose Game 3 in stunning fashion in overtime, it’s going to happen from time to time in the playoffs. That being said, the team is still averaging an insane 4.27 goals per game in the postseason, and that’s why it really hasn’t mattered who has been in net. For now, it’s still G Tomas Vokoun after the benching of G Marc-Andre Fleury. D Kris Letang and C Evgeni Malkin have 16 points apiece in the second season to pace the team, while C Sidney Crosby is one of the three that have at least six goals for the Penguins. Crosby has seven goals and eight helpers. The Penguins have seven players with at least nine points in 11 games, a truly insane statistic.
This is a real step up in competition for Rask, and we think that he is going to fold just a bit in the eyes of the pressure that the Penguins are bringing to the table. This will be a great series, but first blood is going to go to the Pens, who should put up at least three goals once again and get the ‘W’.
