2014-’15 NHL Betting: Buffalo Sabres season outlook

The Buffalo Sabres are still trying to pick up the pieces from a dismal 2013-14 season, in which they only logged 21 wins and 157 goals, both categories ranking last in the entire NHL.

They turn to Ted Nolan, who is in his second tenure in Buffalo after taking over late last year, to utilize training camp and valuable preseason time and try to not repeat last year’s disaster. He took over as Buffalo’s 3rd coach in a calendar year, and was also here for the ‘95 and ‘96 seasons. He brings in assistant coaches with plenty of their own experience in the NHL. Former player Brian Trottier of Islanders fame has nine years of coaching experience as well, and Arturs Irbe, Latvia National Head Coach, comes over to work with Jhonas Enroth and Michal Neuvirth in net.

2013-14 Buffalo Sabres Betting Recap/Stats

Record: 21 – 51 – 10 (52 Pts)

Offense: 1.83 GPG (30th)
Defense: 2.96 GAA (25th)

Power Play: 14.1% (29th)

Penalty Kill: 81.4% (T-19th)

You would think that betting on a team that only won 21 games all year would bring plenty of profit to those who bet against them, but they were 46 – 36 ATS and covered the line more often than not.

In direct correlation with a team that came in 30th in scoring with less than two goals a game, the Under was the play on plenty of occasions last year with 29 / 39 O/U, not including any pushes on the straight 5 action.

2014-15 Buffalo Sabres Overview

Ted Nolan hopes to bring in a new coaching staff to start his first full season back at the helm for the Sabres. Defense might be an issue with the loss of Christian Ehroff, who plainly came out and stated that he wanted no part of a rebuilding process, nor of being a mentor to anyone.

They will not be depending solely on up-and-coming talent as they rebuild the organization from top to bottom. After 17 years with Darcy Regier calling the shots, new GM Tim Murray has clearly stated that he expects the Sabres to be competitive, has brought in some leadership proven veterans, and has set a standard expectation on the team for years to come.

They bring in experienced Brian Gionta to work with Sam Reinhart and Cody Hodgson, and the back line will be supported by Josh Gorges, who came over from Montreal, and monster Tyler Myers. Three-time 30-goal scorer Matt Moulson is back in a Sabres uniform as he signed for five years. Slovac National Andrej Meszaros will bring his experience to work with a youthful back line to help teach and contribute.

This team is not coming into the season thinking they have to simply do better than last year. That is a given. There is actually a bit of expectation that with the right mix of veterans working with some young talent this could potentially work well. There are many questions to be answered over the next six months.
