On Sunday the NBA betting action will get going when the Los Angeles Lakers play host to the Chicago Bulls at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC inside the Staples Center.
On Thursday night the Chicago Bulls fell 102-87 to the Golden State Warriors as they dropped under .500 (24-25 SU) on the season. Chicago jumped out to a 29-16 lead after the first quarter before being outscored 86-58 the rest of the way. Bulls F Taj Gibson led the offense with 26 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists in the loss. Gibson is currently putting up the best scoring numbers of his career averaging 12.5 points per game up from 8.0 last season. Chicago is one of the league’s most physical teams up front behind its powerful players F Joakim Noah and F Carlos Boozer who complement the play of Gibson. For a team missing an MVP caliber player like G Derrick Rose who is out for the season, the Bulls depend on their front line to score points and rebound the ball. Boozer’s status for Sunday is questionable as he has a strained calf and missed the game against the Warriors. Chicago is 12-14 ATS away from the United Center and has covered just one spread on the first three games of this west coast swing.
The Lakers got a big win on Friday night 112-98 on the road over the Philadelphia 76ers at the Wells Fargo Center. Los Angeles got six players to score in double figures in the win. The effort was led by G Steve Nash who had 19 points, four rebounds, and five assists in just his second game since returning from a back injury. It was only Nash’s eighth game of the season and in those games he averages 8.3 points to go with 5.4 assists per game. This team will need Nash to stay healthy if they want to be successful this season. The Lakers are currently in fourth place in the Pacific Division with an 18-32 SU record. Nash, G Steve Blake (Thigh), and C Jordan Hill (Head) are all expected to play in this game for Los Angeles who is looking to get its third victory in a row. At 11-9-1 ATS at home, the Lakers will play their next six games at Staples Center after playing eight of their L/10 games on the road. Getting a win in a game like this will be important for this team as they try to hold it together for G Kobe Bryant (Knee) who is expected to return later this month.
These two met back on January 20th with the Bulls taking a 102-100 overtime victory on their home floor. Chicago got 27 points off the bench from G D.J. Augustin in that game as he shot five-of-seven from three point range. We don’t expect to see that kind of output from him in this game and with the Lakers playing well we like them to defend their home floor. Look for Los Angeles to hang on in a low scoring battle with Chicago on Sunday. Los Angeles 89 – Chicago 85
