The UCLA Bruins have a perfect ATS record this year, while the California Golden Bears have yet to cover a game. That said, that doesn’t mean that the hosts are just going to get the job done and cover a huge number on the college football odds in what should be a great Pac-12 game on Saturday night.
Cal has been exciting this year, but there is a real question about how good this team really is. At just 1-4, it is clear that the Golden Bears aren’t going to end up making it to a bowl game this year, but Head Coach Sonny Dykes is really just trying to set the stage for the future. The team is averaging 93.6 offensive plays per game this year, and that’s what the goal is for Dykes’ offense. QB Jared Goff has 1,801 yards in five games thus far this year. His nine touchdowns aren’t really high enough, and his five picks are probably just a tad too high for the likings of Golden Bears fans, but this is a freshman that we are talking about that has a lot of growing to do in this offense. Both WR Chris Harper and WR Bryce Treggs are on pace for 1,000+ yard seasons, and that’s big for this team in spite of the fact that the offense is really just wild to watch.
The Bruins have been tested in the past by teams that have up-tempo offenses, and this might not be an exception. Remember that last year, the Golden Bears actually won this game and won it comfortably against UCLA, though that didn’t stop the team from making it to a second straight Pac-12 Championship Game. These Bruins probably don’t get enough credit for what they do defensively. They didn’t have a great game last week against the Utah Utes, but that was a tough sell against a team that was hungry and was at home. The Bruins are still only allowing 20.2 points per game, good for 30th in the nation. When you’ve got a team that is averaging 561.8 yards and 48.0 points per game, ranking 4th and 5th in the entire country, that’s more than good enough. QB Brett Hundley has been good this year, but he isn’t quite rounding into the form of a Heisman Trophy contender, but he still has a lot of talent and has been one of the best players on this team.
Cal is 4-1 ATS in the last five games in this series, and we think that this is going to be another one of these games where the Golden Bears find a way to cover, though we know that this time around, they aren’t even coming close to winning this game SU.
