For a second straight season the Cleveland Indians lead the AL Central standings in early May. The Indians hope to finish the season stronger than they did last season. Boston is struggling to find its way, and the team has lost several heartbreaking games in the last couple weeks. Josh Beckett has been the team’s stopper, and they’ll send him to the mound Thursday night.

Derek Lowe returns to face his old team at Fenway Park Thursday night. Lowe’s best years as a major leaguer were his time with the Boston Red Sox. Last year he struggled badly, but he has been very good in 2012 thus far. Lowe has an impressive 2.39 ERA. He does have a high WHIP of 1.49, so he has been pitching out of trouble quite well. Lowe already has four wins this season.

Cleveland’s offense has been pretty good this season. Asdrubal Cabrera isn’t putting up power numbers, but he still leads the team with a .337 batting average. Jason Kipnis has been on a tear of late, and he leads the team with 20 RBI’s. Carlos Santana is hitting .265, which is a huge improvement from last year’s .239 mark. The Indians have a solid young nucleus of hitters, but there are some weak spots at the bottom of the order.

Josh Beckett missed his previous start with a stiff lat muscle, but he is expected to be ready for this one. Beckett has been a little shaky so far this year. He is just 2-3 with a 4.45 ERA. He was beaten up for seven runs in his first start of the year, but he has been solid in his last four starts. Boston’s team ERA of 5.29 is second worst in the majors.

The Red Sox are missing Kevin Youkilis, Carl Crawford, and Jacoby Ellsbury, but they have still been putting up quite a few runs. David Ortiz is off to a red hot start, and he leads the team with a .35”5 average. Ortiz also has 7 homers and 23 RBI’s in 2012. Ryan Sweeney, Mike Aviles, and Cody Ross have all produced at a much higher than expected level for this offense. Adrian Gonzalez hasn’t been able to find his power stroke just yet, and the team would like to see him heat up.

In this wacky year, the Big Ten conference will have 12 teams and the Big 12 will have only ten after the departure of Colorado and Nebraska. The Big 12 landscape will change significantly without those two. Here is an early look at the college football betting odds for who in the Big 12 has the best chance to win the 2012 national championship.

The Oklahoma Sooners top the list as the most likely team in the nation to go all the way this year with 2012 BCS championship odds. The dynamic passing duo of quarterback Landry Jones and Ryan Broyles will be back, along with linebacker Travis Lewis and four starters on the offensive line.

Even after the pitiful showing by the Texas Longhorns last season, they are expected to be back in contention. Defensive coordinator Will Muschamp has moved on to Florida, and quarterback Garrett Gilbert will need massive improvement for this team to live up to expectations.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys are poised for another big run after the announcement that quarterback Brandon Weeden and wide receiver Justin Blackmon will both return. These two helped the Cowboys have one of the best offenses in the nation last year.

After leading the nation the previous four years with the most players selected in the first-round of the NFL Draft (30), the ACC lost a momentary grip on the position when only three players were chosen on Day One of the draft this season. Included was Florida State’s Christian Ponder, who became the first ACC quarterback to go in the opening round since Matt Ryan in 2008.

The floodgates opened on Day Two, however, as the loop witnessed a whopping 13 picks go in the 2nd-round when 15 of the top 60 players in this year’s draft came out of the ACC.

Looking back, in its six years as a 12-member league, the ACC has sent 50 teams to a bowl game, topped only by the SEC (51) in that span.

The kingpin of the conference, Virginia Tech, is the only team in the nation with 10-plus wins each of the last seven seasons. Not to mention Georgia Tech led the nation in rushing offense and Boston College topped the land in rushing defense last season.

The Big Ten will be looking to bounce back from an abysmal bowl season, picking up just three victories courtesy of The Ohio State Buckeyes, Iowa Hawkeyes and Illinois Fighting Illini. The league also suffered two devastating defeats courtesy of the SEC in bowl games, Michigan lost 52-14 to Mississippi State and Michigan State was blown out 49-7 to Alabama.

This year however will be one of the most anticipated seasons in Big Ten history. The conference brings along some new faces to the league this season, Brady Hoke becomes the new headman at Michigan, Bo Pelini brings in the Nebraska Cornhuskers and also the prestigious conference will hold its first championship game December 3, 2011, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Another interesting factor this fall is the introduction of sub-divisions in conference play.

In September, the conference announced its two divisions: Legends and Leaders. The Legends division is composed of Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska and Northwestern. The Leaders will consist of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin.

As referenced in last year’s pre-season preview, this always-powerful basketball conference has come a long way toward establishing a football pedigree since it rejected Penn State’s application for admittance in 1985.

Under its current alignment, which has been in place for six seasons, the BIG EAST is a combined 186-79 SU in non-conference games (.721). That stands as the best six-year non-league record in the history of the conference and second among FBS conferences, only behind the SEC. FYI: inside the aforementioned straight up record is a sterling 21-6 ATS mark in these games when playing off back-to-back losses.

Two new coaches with sterling Division 1 records join the conference for 2011, namely Todd Graham (Pittsburgh) and Paul Pasqualoni (Connecticut). Graham led Tulsa to a 36-17 mark in his four years with the Hurricane while Pasqualoni, who went 62-33 in BIG EAST games at Syracuse from 1991-2004, has more BIG EAST wins than any coach in the conference.

In addition, the top six quarterbacks in terms of passing yards per game last year are back in 2011, including Zach Collaros (Cincinnati), Geno Smith (WVU), Tino Sunseri (Pitt), Ryan Nassib (Syracuse), Chas Dodd (Rutgers) and B. J. Daniels (USF).
