The Ball State Cardinals are a week away from taking on the Northern Illinois Huskies in what amounts to be the MAC West title game. They are going to have to avoid a huge look-ahead spot this week on Wednesday night when they face off with the Central Michigan Chippewas in Muncie.

It has been a tough year for the Chippies. They’re just 2-2 in conference play through four games, and they know that they are just playing out the string. They might finish at 6-6, but that isn’t going to be good enough to get the job done to get into a bowl game barring a ton of teams falling short of that coveted six-win barrier. The issues have come on both sides of the ball, but the offense has had the bigger problems. The club is only averaging 340.8 yards per game and 18.6 points per game, and both numbers rank in the bottom 20 in the land. CMU hasn’t scored more than 26 points in a game this season, and it is clear that without scoring at least 20 in this one, there is no hope to stick in front of this number. The Cardinals are just far too good this year to be challenged in a game like this one, and we are fairly certain that it is going to show which one of these teams in a legit MAC title contender.

The argument could be made that Ball State should be one of the Top 25 teams in the land. The only game that was lost this season came against the North Texas Mean Green, and though that game should have been won, it isn’t the end of the world. The game against Northern Illinois next week will make all the difference, knowing that it could essentially be the MAC Championship Game. The Cardinals can’t get too far ahead of themselves, though. There aren’t many teams in the country that have an offense that is this potent. QB Keith Wenning has 23 TDs against five picks, and he has a receiver in WR Willie Snead who has 1,057 yards and 10 scores with three games left in the regular season and perhaps as many as five games left to play. RB Jahwan Edwards has a dozen touchdowns this year as well, and he has 659 yards. RB Horactio Banks is one of the best second backs in the MAC too, and he should be playing a big role in this game also.

The Chippewas are really catching Ball State in a good spot in this one. The hosts really shouldn’t stand all that much of a chance of beating a number like this with all of the attention that is clearly going into next week’s game against the best team in the conference. Ball State won’t lose, but it won’t win by more than three touchdowns either.
