Spread: Chiefs -4.5
A week after losing their first game of the season, the Kansas City Chiefs are going to try to get back on track when they fight it out in NFL betting action against the San Diego Chargers.
The Bolts were also beaten last week on the road by the Miami Dolphins in a game they’ll probably feel like they should have won. They have now been beaten in three straight, but the key thing to remember here is that these were all definitively winnable games. In fact, only a 27-17 loss against the Oakland Raiders was a certain defeat for most of the game, and even that was probably a play or two from going the other direction. San Diego is a lot better than a 4-6 record suggests that it is, and if we had to guess, this is a team that could still legitimately challenge for the last Wild Card slot in the AFC. The Chargers quietly rank seventh in the NFL in total offense and 11th in scoring defense, and if they can keep holding down foes to 22.2 points per game, they’ll be in really good shape. It’s helping that QB Philip Rivers is staying relatively clean and is putting up career numbers as well. He’s not winging the ball down the field all that much, but thanks to a 70.9 completion percentage, he is averaging 8.3 yards per pass.
This is where we are going to find out how much resolve the Chiefs have. They were thoroughly beaten last week by the Denver Broncos, and this is the sandwich game between that game and the next one with the Broncos here at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chargers are a team that they should be beating, but they really haven’t proven all season long that they can play with any truly elite teams. In fact, KC has played against exactly one team this year with better than a 6-5 record, and that was a horrid game in which it was outdone by 83 yards and 10 points. The week before, the Chiefs were outgained by 260 yards by the Buffalo Bills, and they have already had two games this season where they have been outrushed by at least 118 yards. Those are all pretty damning statistics for a team that is 9-1, and with six games left on the docket, none of which the team will be favored by more than perhaps a half dozen points, things could get ugly if this one ends up being lost.
We’re very wary of this game for the Chiefs, and we have been ever since it shaped out that these two games with Denver were going to be for the AFC West title and very likely the #1 seed in the AFC. San Diego is good enough to win this game, and we think that it is going to end up getting the job done when push comes to shove.
