Kansas City Chiefs (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS) at Detroit Lions (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS), Sunday, 1 pm Eastern, CBS
Playing with heightened expectations for the first time in many years, the Detroit Lions got off to a good start with an opening-week road victory. Conversely, the Kansas City Chiefs, after reaching the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, stunk up Arrowhead Stadium in their season opener. So it’s a meeting of two teams coming off polar-opposite performances when the Lions host the Chiefs this Sunday (1 pm Eastern, CBS).
Detroit ended last season by winning its last four games, and is a chic pick to click for this season. The Lions then began their quest for their first playoff appearance in over a decade last week by beating the Buccaneers in Tampa 27-20. Detroit fell behind in the first quarter on an interception return for a score, but dominated from there, taking a 27-13 lead into the fourth quarter and hanging on.
For the game Detroit outrushed Tampa 126-56, held a 36-24 time-of-possession advantage, and saw second-year QB Matt Stafford go 24-for-33 passing for 305 yards with three TDs.
KC, meanwhile, the defending AFC West champions, started out this season with a stinker. The Chiefs were four-point home favorites over Buffalo last week, but looked terrible in losing 41-7. KC fell behind 20-0 before scoring late in the second quarter, then got shut out from there by a defense that ranked 24th in the league last year.
For the game the Chiefs allowed the Bills to rush for 163 yards, as KC lost the time-of-possession battle by a 37-23 margin. Last week teams that held a TOP advantage went 13-3 both straight-up and against the spread.
Chiefs QB Matt Cassel didn’t do much to help, going 22-for-36 passing for just 119 yards. That’s a pathetic 3.3 yards per attempt.
And to add injury to insult, Chiefs S Eric Berry tore an ACL Sunday, and he’s now out for the season. So don’t be surprised if the Lions attack through the air this Sunday.
These two teams last met four years ago, when the Lions beat KC 25-20 in Detroit.
5Dimes.com opened this game with Detroit favored by 9.5 points, with an over/under of 44. The Lions then got bet up to -10, but as of Friday morning the line sat at nine. And the O/U has been bumped up to 45.5.
Chiefs vs. Lions Pick
Detroit looked good last week, while KC was awful. But the Lions haven’t been favored by this many points in a long time. So while the home crowd at Ford Field should be raucous, and while we’re not big fans of the Chiefs, we’ll go against the public and our own common sense and take the points in this game.
