Head Coach Andy Reid is going to be at the center all of things controversial this week, as he returns to the City of Brotherly Love for the first time with his new team, the Kansas City Chiefs against his old team, the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Chiefs are off to a 2-0 start this year, and their win last week against the Dallas Cowboys was a lot more impressive (at least from a competition level standpoint) than the win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1. KC is a team that can really be strong this year if QB Alex Smith continues to be at his best. Thus far on the year, Smith has thrown for 396 yards and four TDs, and most importantly, he hasn’t turned the ball over. RB Jamaal Charles was quiet last week, but he does have 132 yards and a score on the season. The real issue though, is going to be with this defense. Kansas City has held its two foes to a grand total of 16 points on the defensive side of the ball, and the team has only conceded one touchdown all year to boot. You can get away with averaging just 302.0 yards per game as the Chiefs are at the moment when you can hold teams down to 248.0 yards per game as they are as well.
Philly is the far more interesting study. The team ran 53 plays in the first half against the Washington Redskins in Week 1, and since that point, it hasn’t even had 80 total plays. That’s not going to make Head Coach Chip Kelly happy, and we think that he outsmarted himself last week in a loss to the San Diego Chargers as well. How much of this is that the team is tired? Remember that this is going to be the third time the Eagles have played in the last 17 days, and that’s a heck of a challenge for any team, let alone one that is out there to run 90 plays a night if it can. QB Michael Vick has put points on the board, but he doesn’t totally look like himself at this point. WR DeSean Jackson and RB LeSean McCoy are both putting up video game numbers left and right, but none of it is going to matter if the defense is going to allow 60 points in two games like this.
Between the way that the defense has played, the short week for the second straight game, and the fact that no one knows the tendencies of these Philadelphia players better than Reid, we have to think that the Chiefs have the ability to win this one. Don’t be shocked if they pull off the upset on Thursday Night Football.
