The 2012/2013 NBA season marked the changing of the guard in the city of Los Angeles as the Clippers moved to the top of class ahead of the aging Lakers. Led by Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, the Clippers finished the regular season in first place in the Pacific Division at 56-26 while the Lakers stumbled to third at 45-37. They went on to lose to Memphis in the first round of the playoffs four games to two, but they also clearly established themselves as one of the top teams in the Western Conference heading into this season.
A big part of the reason that the Clippers are one of the favorites to win the West this season is the addition of Doc Rivers as the team’s new head coach. He is a proven winner and knows exactly what it takes to bring home a championship. The necessary talent on this team was already in place, so it is now counting on Rivers to be the missing ingredient in a run all the way to a world title.
The Lakers were a very average team even with Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant in the lineup, so with Howard off to Houston and Bryant still on the mend from an Achilles injury, they could find themselves battling with teams such as Sacramento and Phoenix to stay out of the basement in the Pacific Division in the early going of this new season.
With a serious void in star power that had been a staple with the Lakers over the years, it will be up to veteran players such as Steve Nash and Pau Gasol to hold down the fort until Bryant can return to the starting lineup. As far as this season opener, it is highly doubtful that the current Lakers’ roster will be able to hang with the Clippers for all four quarters in the highly charged confines of the Staples Center. They will be battling a Clippers’ team that spent years playing in their shadow in this very building, so you know that the motivation to post an impressive win as the visiting team on Tuesday night will be running high.

I see the final score in this one ending up with a double digit spread, so do not sweat giving the home team the eight points. Look for the Clippers to make a bold statement that the Staples Center is now their house with a dominating opening day win.
