The Los Angeles Clippers continue their East Coast swing on Thursday night in the first half of the TNT doubleheader of NBA betting action against the Brooklyn Nets.
The Clips won an emotional game yesterday at the TD Garden in the return of Head Coach Doc Rivers to his old stomping grounds in Beantown. Now, the emotions will be running high once again, as F Paul Pierce and F Kevin Garnett, amongst others, take on their former coach. Last month when these two teams played, neither Garnett nor Pierce, nor C Brook Lopez, nor G Deron Williams were in the lineup, so it wasn’t surprising that the Clippers came up with a victory. Of course, LA did have G JJ Redick in the fold, and he scored 26 points on that day. What we’re finding out about LA is that it needs that swingman to step up and knock down the outside shots. Redick was the perfect man for that job, but he has a hand injury that will keep him out for at least another six weeks or so. In the interim, G Chris Paul needs to find some others to dish the rock to, a job which isn’t easy on a team that, though is talented, doesn’t have a ton of guards out on the perimeter.
Head Coach Jason Kidd probably isn’t at the point quite yet where he should be fired, but he’s getting there, which is tough to do for a man who hasn’t even coached in 25 games yet in his career. He can say that he is within striking distance of the lead in the Atlantic Division, but so could the Arizona Wildcats if they were playing in the Atlantic Division as well. Brooklyn has won consecutive games, and this is a chance to lock down a third straight win. It’s not surprising that the victories are coming with Williams back in the lineup. He’s arguably the best point guard in the NBA, and he had 25 points and seven assists in his first game back, a 104-96 win over the Celtics. The team hadn’t scored more than 102 points in a regulation game this year, and upon just one game with Williams back in the lineup, the Nets reached 104. Back as well are Lopez (who had 24 points against Boston), Garnett (who had 11 points and nine boards), and Pierce, which essentially makes this club as whole as it is going to get.
Taking LA would be the easy thing to do, but there is a point that all of this travel becomes problematic. The Clippers are going to get beaten in this one, as we think that Williams really does make that big of a difference for the Nets. Take the points with the hosts on Thursday night, and expect that there is going to be an upset on TNT. Brooklyn 100 – Los Angeles 97
