For the first time this year, the Duke Blue Devils will be playing a legitimate road game, and we’re set to make our college basketball pick in their trip to Value City Arena on Tuesday against the Ohio State Buckeyes.
This is going to be the biggest test of the year to date for a very young Duke team. So far this year, the Blue Devils do have some close victories against some great squads, as there is no shame in just being able to take victories against the likes of the Belmont Bruins, Michigan State Spartans, Davidson Wildcats, Tennessee Volunteers, Michigan Wolverines, and Kansas Jayhawks. Again, this is that brutal road game though in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, and Ohio State is clearly the best of the bunch of the teams on a very tough slate to date. Once again this year, the Dookies aren’t very deep, but this year, the talent doesn’t seem to be as prominent as it has been in years past. Seth Curry is the leading scorer at 15.1 points per game, though all five in the starting lineup are averaging double digits in scoring per game. Mason Plumlee is one of the top big men in the game, and he is averaging a double-double at 11.4 points and 10.0 boards per game.
The Buckeyes are going to want to make their case at being the No. 1 in the land, and a convincing win in this game might be just enough, especially if the Kentucky Wildcats get beaten in one or both of their brutally tough games this week. Though the Buckeyes haven’t played nearly the hardest schedule in the country, it’s hard to argue with what they have accomplished. They are outscoring teams by a whopping 30.5 points per game thus far on the year, and the only game that didn’t finish with at least a 30 point margin of victory was the 81-74 win over the Florida Gators in the second game of the year right here at Value City Arena. This is a veteran bunch that knows what it is like to go against the best teams in the land. Jared Sullinger is averaging 18.8 points and 10.7 boards per game, but this is the first time that he is going to have a legitimate big man to battle with in the paint. William Buford, another candidate for the All-American team, is averaging 17.7 points per game, second on the team.
Duke Blue Devils @ Ohio State Buckeyes Pick: In the end, a very veteran Ohio State team is going to have the big time experience over the Blue Devils. There is probably going to be some general “Duke bias” in this one, and we plan on taking full advantage. The Buckeyes will snare a big win for the Big Ten in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
