The battle for first place in the SEC East is going to be on the line on Tuesday night in Athens, as the Florida Gators and Georgia Bulldogs will fight it out to beat the college basketball odds.

UF hasn’t been winning games by pretty margins of late, but it has gotten the job done, and Head Coach Billy Donovan knows that there should be no issues about returning to the NCAA Tournament. This is a tough week though, with road games at Georgia and at Mississippi State, especially for a team that really doesn’t typically have a ton of depth. Erving Walker, Kenny Boynton, and Chandler Parsons could be called upon to play all 40 minutes in a tight game if Donovan so desires, as all three average over 31 minutes on the court per game. Walker is the team’s leading scorer at 13.7 points per game this year, but he is one of the four men that enter this one averaging double digits in scoring. Do keep a close eye on Parsons, as he does a little bit of everything for the blue and orange. He is the fourth leading scorer at 10.0 points per game, the top rebounder at 6.9 per game, and top assist man with a total of 71 for the year. Defense is the key for Donovan and company though, as this is one of the few teams in the SEC that can boast that it is allowing fewer than 60 points per game on the campaign.

Georgia isn’t exactly guaranteed a trip to the NCAA Tournament quite yet, but it has to be counting down the wins necessary to get into the field of 68. One would figure that seven more wins, which would get it to 10 on the season in the SEC, would get the job done, though an eighth victory would really remove all doubt whatsoever, especially with as weak as the SEC West really is. The threesome to keep an eye on for the Dawgs is Trey Thompkins, Travis Leslie, and Gerald Robinson, Jr. All three are averaging at least 14 points per game, and when combined, they are putting together over 46 of the team’s 71.3 points per game. Thompkins and Leslie are two of the better big men in the conference, as both are averaging over seven boards on the average night and can put together double-doubles against anyone in the land. Watch out for Jeremy Price though, as the third forward on this team scored 11 points against the Mississippi State Bulldogs to key a 22 point victory on Saturday.

These two teams are going to be tough to separate, but we tend to believe that the lesser known Bulldogs are going to end up getting the nod over the more notable Gators. UF has played a tougher schedule to date, but the majority of these big wins have come at home. That near miss against the Auburn Tigers on the road last week scares the wits out of us, so we’ll back a UGA team that has gone a rock solid 9-1 SU at home this year.
