Tobacco Road will be burning on Thursday night for college basketball betting action when the NC State Wolfpack look for a huge upset of the North Carolina Tar Heels.
The Wolfpack have a decent resume this year with 15 wins and counting, but they still have a lot of work to do if they are going to get into the NCAA Tournament. They still have six road games, four of which are coming against teams that are at least going to be on the bubble, and they still have home games left with this UNC team, the Virginia Cavaliers, and the Florida State Seminoles. Needless to say, this isn’t the easiest road left to the dance, and eventually, NC State is going to have to win a game like this one to put itself in the field of 68. The Wolfpack do have an experienced team that can really do some damage, even on the road, and we have seen that already with these three straight wins in ACC play, two of which came on the road. Scott Wood can shoot the ball from all over the court, and he is knocking down 45.3 percent of his three-point shots. He leads the team with 13.3 points per game, but he is one of the five that are averaging double digits in scoring. Keep a close eye on the inside combo of CJ Leslie and Richard Howell. They are going to have their work cut out for them in this one with all of the bigs that the Tar Heels are going to throw their way, but these two are both double-double candidates on a nightly basis and might be able to keep up with the Heels.
The Tar Heels are coming off of an interesting stretch. They are still probably smarting after getting their doors blown off by the aforementioned Seminoles in Tallahassee a week ago, though they did lick their wounds by knocking off the Virginia Tech Hokies in Blacksburg over the weekend. Head Coach Roy Williams knows that this is a dangerous game, especially since it is the first that the team is going to be playing without Dexter Strickland. Strickland, who came on strong last year as the team’s point guard, is now out for the rest of the year after getting injured against V-Tech, and what is now left behind is a team that really doesn’t have a lot of experience in the backcourt. That means that Tyler Zeller, Harrison Barnes, and John Henson are going to have to do even more for the team, and that might even mean more ball handling for Barnes when he is on the court.
The Final Word: Be very careful, UNC! The Tar Heels are a beatable team, and we have seen that time and time again. The Wolfpack can beat anyone in the land because of the three point shot, especially when Wood gets going. This could be a tough battle with Strickland out of the fold. NCSU hasn’t won at the Dean Dome since 2003, but this could be its lucky day.
