College Basketball Betting Preview: Villanova Wildcats vs. Syracuse Orange

Villanova Wildcats
(23-4, 17-9 ATS)

Syracuse Orange
(26-2, 17-7 ATS)

Two of the best teams in the entire country square off at the Carrier Dome in upstate New York on Saturday night when the Villanova Wildcats engage in a college basketball betting battle with the Syracuse Orange. The winner of this game will have a huge leg up for a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will mostly likely also be the #1 seed in the upcoming Big East tourney as well. Syracuse will mathematically clinch the regular season title with a win.

If you’re the Wildcats, you’ve got to try your best to push the tempo of this game as quickly as possible. Villanova possesses one of the best backcourts in the nation in Gs Corey Fisher and Scottie Reynolds. That duo is scoring 32.8 of the Cats’ 83.8 points per game this year. The third guard in that bunch, Corey Stokes was cited for urinating in public on Thursday morning, and HC Jay Wright has yet to make it clear if one of his starters will be suspended for all or a part of the biggest game of the season.

Even though the Cuse have the #7 ranked offense in the country at 81.2 points per game, they’re going to have to slow the speed of the contest down just a hair and try to remain efficient. No team in the country has a better shooting percentage from the floor than Syracuse does (52.2%), and its defense has the chance to be dominant in the patented 2-3 zone. Even though Providence just dropped 85 points on the Orange, they’re only conceding 65.3 points per game in ’09-’10.

If you’re just looking at recent form, you’ve got to go with the Orange. Syracuse only has one mild trip since early in the Big East season, while Villanova had lost three out of five before beating down South Florida on Wednesday. However, that 74-49 win was one of purpose. The Wildcats are a determined squad that has the ability of beating the ‘Cuse. And why not? Syracuse has already lost twice at the Carrier Dome this season, while Villanova already has road wins in conference at West Virginia, Louisville, and Marquette of note. The Wildcats may not ultimately win it, but issuing them so many points feels like a winning ticket.
