The top dogs in the ACC are back in NCAA basketball betting action on Thursday night, when the Duke Blue Devils take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
After a suspect first portion of the season outside of the ACC, the Demon Deacons know that they have to get on a roll if they hope to be playing in any postseason tournament this year. Sure, there was a home win to start off the conference slate against the Virginia Tech Hokies, but since that point, the Deacs were beaten and beaten badly by the Maryland Terrapins and NC State Wolfpack. The really big problem is the offense, which is averaging just 67.6 points per game this season. CJ Harris is the top scorer on the club, averaging 17.1 points per game, and Travis McKie is right behind with 17.1 points per game. Tony Chennault is good for 10.6 points per game. Aside from that though, there are only four scorers that are averaging even five points per game, and the rest of the team just sort of goes MIA most of the time.
The Dookies haven’t always played their best ball thus far in the ACC season, but in spite of the fact that they only have one cover on the ACC slate to date, they haven’t been beaten yet, and they are finding a way to win the tough games down the stretch. This hasn’t been great for NCAA basketball bettors, but it does prove that in spite of the fact that the team has graduated a slew of talent over the course of the last several years, it is still one that is strong enough to really get the job done when it matters most. Unlike in recent years though, this is a far more well-balanced team. Austin Rivers, son of Boston Celtics Head Coach Doc Rivers, is averaging 13.8 points per game, and he is one of the six players on this team averaging at least seven points per night. No one plays even 30 minutes per game, and the end result might see this team be a heck of a lot fresher, especially when you’re talking about playing those back-to-backs in the ACC Tournament or the two games in three days in the NCAA Tournament.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons @ Duke Blue Devils Keys: If the Demon Deacons are going to win this game, McKie and Harris have to be just absolute studs. This Wake Forest club just doesn’t have enough talent elsewhere to get the job done. There are just too many talented players on the court for the hosts, and especially playing at Cameron Indoor Stadium, it’s hard to see anything but the first resounding double digit victory for the Blue Devils in the ACC campaign.
