The Mountaineers are playing some absolutely fantastic defense right now, and this is why they are right on the verge of the Top 25 in one poll, and already in the bottom of the poll in the other. They have kept each of their last four foes down to 55 points or fewer, and they have only allowed an average of 50.0 points per game in those four. The offense hasn’t always been stellar, but if there is a great equalizer to winning a game on the road in the best conference in the land, the ‘D’ is it. WVU is led this year by Casey Mitchell, who is averaging 16.6 points per game. This is the second straight year that Kevin Jones has really done a great job both on the glass and on the scoreboard, but he really does seem like an underappreciated member of the blue and gold even though he is putting up 13.2 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Head Coach Bob Huggins has a squad that can be explosive, especially with John Flowers on the inside. The big man has made some thunderous dunks and is averaging 2.5 blocks per game on the other side of the court, one of the best marks in the conference.
Is everything okay with Head Coach Jay Wright’s team? Last year, the Wildcats were playing great ball until they hit a down stretch just before the Big East Tournament, and they absolutely never recovered from the hit and were bounced in the second round of the dance even though they were a No. 2 seed. If the Wildcats really have hit the brick wall, this is going to be a long, long descent which could ultimately land them firmly on the bubble. However, we know that Villanova is destined to win some more games and that this is just the grind that is the Big East. Three straight failed covers in this conference is nothing new even though two of the three games were played at home for Villanova. The win over the Marquette Golden Eagles 75-70 was a sign that things might be turning around, but this is going to be a very tough task for a team that isn’t playing up to snuff at the moment. The good news is that there is a ton of talent on the team to work with. The two Corey’s, Corey Stokes and Corey Fisher, make up one of the best backcourts in the entire country, and this is why the Cats are scratching teams for an average of 76.0 points per game this year.
We’ll be getting a lot of points with the Mountaineers in this one, and we’d be foolish not to take them. WVU is just playing too well right now to be stopped, and we can’t see it getting blown away in this one.
