College Basketball Pick: Baylor vs Texas A&M
NCAA Basketball Spread: Baylor -6.5
Baylor started the season 17-0 before losing two straight against Kansas and Missouri. The Bears have bounced back to win their last two games. Texas A&M has struggled on the offensive end this year, and the Aggies are just 12-8 overall. Khris Middleton is expected to miss this game with a leg injury, which will leave the Aggies in a tough spot offensively. This should be a great environment for a college basketball game in College Station on Wednesday night.
It’s hard to think of a team with a more talented frontcourt than the Baylor Bears. Perry Jones III is absolutely loved by the NBA scouts because of his amazing ability. Jones leads the team in both scoring and rebounding. He also shoots 55% from the floor. Quincy Miller and Quincy Acy are also terrific post players. Miller is a freshman who has a ton of versatility to score from the inside or step out and knock down a jumper. Acy is a senior leader for this team, and he shoots 58% from the floor. Acy is an underrated player, but he does all the dirty work that helps this team win.
Pierre Jackson and Brady Heslip have been very good in the backcourt for the Bears. Coming into the season this was a big question mark for Baylor, but the guard play has been much better than most expected. Baylor is shooting 49.4% from the floor as a team, so they are a very efficient group offensively. The team’s athleticism and length on the defensive end make them tough to penetrate on. Baylor is giving up just 63.4 points per game.
Texas A&M struggles on the offensive end, and those struggles will be magnified without Middleton. Middleton is usually the guy the offense runs through, so the Aggies will need someone else to step up in this one. Elston Turner is the team’s leading scorer. Turner averages 14.7 points per game, but he is shooting just 41.9% from the floor. Ray Turner and David Loubeau are solid in the post. Neither of these guys are powerhouses in the post, but they both are fundamentally sound players.
The Aggies play very good defense, which helps them stay in almost every game. Opponents are shooting just 38.2% against Texas A&M so far this year. The Aggies are a physical team that forces the opposition to play a style of basketball that they aren’t comfortable playing. Texas A&M is giving up just 59.5 points per contest this season.
Texas A&M won’t make it easy on Baylor with their tough defense, but I do think the Bears frontcourt will end up being too much for the Aggies in this one. Look for a low scoring game here.
Prediction: Baylor 62 Texas A&M 55
