Arizona State Sun Devils
(3-3, 4-1-1 ATS)
California Golden Bears
(3-3, 4-2 ATS)
Pac-10 foes are going to take to the gridiron on Saturday afternoon in Berkeley, as the Cal Golden Bears face the Arizona State Sun Devils in a crucial Pac-10 battle.
The Sun Devils could be on the verge of being an absolutely fantastic team. They finally got into the win column for the first time against a team from the FBS since October 17th of last year. ASU has only been beaten by the NCAA football odds once this year, that coming against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. The offense ranks No. 20 in total ‘O’ at 455.2 yards per game thanks to the play of QB Steven Threet. Threet, the Michigan Wolverines transfer, is completing 60.7 percent of his passes for 1,719 yards with 11 scores. Tossing 11 picks is just too many, and he has thrown eight INTs in his L/3 games. RB Deantre Lewis and RB Cameron Marshall are both having solid years. The two are going to be getting to the 400 yard mark in this game for the season. The two have nine TDs on the season. WR Kerry Taylor is a real deep threat. He has just 25 catches but does have 365 yards and two scores. The defense has had a couple of lousy games, but when push comes to shove, allowing 22.7 points per game isn’t all that bad.
The Golden Bears are going to be in a dire need of some wins very soon if they can’t pull this one off. They have lost three of their last four games and suddenly have games coming up against the Oregon State Beavers, Washington Huskies, Stanford Cardinal, and Oregon Ducks. Could this team really fail to make a bowl game? QB Kevin Riley all of a sudden has only thrown for 392 yards in total in his L/3 games with just three scores and three picks. RB Shane Vereen has rushed the ball 111 times for 630 yards with eight picks. He is also one of six players on the team that is averaging double digits per catch on the year. WR Marvin Jones has had some fantastic games, but he only totally has 29 catches for 398 yards with just two scores. The defense has had four solid games this year, keeping all four of those foes teams to ten points or less. In those other two games though, the Nevada Wolf Pack and USC Trojans have totaled a whopping 100 points. It is anyone’s guess which version of this defense will show up on any given weekend.
The Bears have won seven of the L/8 games outright in this series and are 5-2 ATS in their L/7 in this series. We tend to think that Cal, being the home team, is going to end up being good enough to take care of Threet and company, as there will be that one blunder that this ASU team makes that will cost it. That’s why the Sun Devils just haven’t gotten into the win column that often, and that’s why they’ll be beaten on Saturday.
