The Syracuse Orange are on the move to the ACC in the near future, but that doesn’t mean that they are just tanking the rest of the college football betting season. They’ll open up the Carrier Dome on Saturday in Week 4 of the season against an up and coming Toledo Rockets squad.
The Rockets haven’t been afraid to take anyone on this year. This game is going to look like a reprieve on the schedule after duels against the Boise State Broncos and Ohio State Buckeyes, even if both games were played in the state of Ohio. In fact, there hasn’t been a legitimate road game for this team in which it had to get on an airplane like this since the game at the Northern Illinois Huskies in MAC play, and even that trip was relatively short (bowl games not withstanding). The split QB system that is deployed at Toledo is awfully annoying to say the least, as you never really know whether QB Terrance Owens or QB Austin Dantin is going to get the nod on any specific play. Owens is definitely the more mobile of the two, and though he doesn’t have a cannon for an arm, he can make more plays than Dantin can. Dantin is more of a pure drop back passer, though he does have some legs. This year, the two have combined to throw for 826 yards and eight TDs against just two picks, numbers which truly are impressive considering how brutal this schedule has been.
Meanwhile, the Orange are glad to be back at home after a romp at the USC Trojans last week, but they know that they have to play better ball against the Rockets than they did in their first two home games, or they’re going to be ripe for an upset. Head Coach Doug Marrone and company were nearly beaten by the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, a team that is expected to bring up the rear in a questionable ACC this season, and the very next week, the Rhode Island Rams, as 26.5 point underdogs, nearly pulled off the upset in a seven point loss at the Carrier Dome. QB Ryan Nassib is having a great season though, and he is throwing darts all over the field with incredible efficiency. He is completing 72.5 percent of his passes for 726 yards with seven scores against just one pick. The Orange have taken on the Rockets twice in recent memory, winning 34-7 here at the Carrier Dome and 34-7 at the Glass Bowl and 1999 and 2003 respectively.
Toledo Rockets @ Syracuse Orange Pick: Though we like the Orange this year, this line looks awfully, awfully fishy to say the least. Seeing the Rockets as just field goal underdogs makes us wonder… MAC schools shouldn’t only be field goal underdogs on the road against Big East teams, especially one that played in a bowl game and returns a ton of talent from last year’s roster…
