NCAA Football Betting Favorite: Miami (OH) -14
The Miami (Ohio) Redhawks were the surprise winners of the Mid American Conference last year. Miami has struggled at the beginning of the season, but there is still plenty of time for them to get back in the MAC race. The Akron Zips have only won one MAC game in the past two years. It’s another long season for Akron and Coach Rob Ianello, but they’ll be looking to surprise their in-state rival on Thursday night.
Miami is led by junior quarterback Zac Dysert. This is Dysert’s third year starting for the Redhawks, and he is definitely very comfortable in the team’s offense at this point. Dysert’s numbers have steadily improved each season. He has already thrown for more than 2,100 yards and 14 touchdowns this year. On the downside, the Miami Redhawks have the single best rushing offense in college football. How bad is the rushing attack? This team averages just 67.5 yards per game on the ground. Nick Harwell has really stepped up as the team’s go to receiver this year. Harwell has 50 catches and 778 receiving yards on the year.
The Miami defense has struggled against the run this year, but they have been very good against the pass. The defense has been a little bit inconsistent. They held Kent State to just three points, but the following week they allowed 49 points against Toledo. The Akron offense isn’t very good at all, so Miami’s defense will need to step up and keep the Zips out of the end zone.
Akron really hasn’t had many things go right this season. Coach Ianello decided to go for two to try to win the game in regulation instead of kicking to force overtime, and the Zips failed to convert. Akron lost a heartbreaker 23-22 at home against Central Michigan. Ironically, Akron is ranked 94th out of 120 teams in college football in both passing offense and rushing offense. Clayton Moore has struggled at quarterback for the Zips. Moore is completing 50% of his passes and he has nine touchdowns and seven picks. Jawon Chisholm has been the Zips most reliable player on offense, and he averages 4.9 yards per carry.
The Zips defense wasn’t too bad last year, but it seems they have taken a step backward this season. Akron is giving up 34.1 points per game this season. The Zips have been particularly bad against the run. Opponents are averaging 205 yards on the ground against Akron. Miami doesn’t run well at all, so it will be interesting to see if Akron can slow down the Redhawks offense.
The Zips aren’t terrible against the pass, and Miami really can’t run the football. At the same time, Akron is bad offensively. I think this game stays low scoring.
