The Boise State Broncos will be in the national spotlight again this Friday night as they travel to take on the Bulldogs of Fresno State. Pat Hill’s team always relishes the chance to knock off a highly ranked opponent. Do the Bulldogs have enough firepower to stay with the Broncos this season?
Kellen Moore had one of the worst games of his career in his last week’s win over Nevada. Moore threw for just 142 yards, and he threw two interceptions. For a star like Moore, a game like that is extremely surprising, but I don’t expect to see two poor games in a row from him. Moore is one of the best quarterbacks in the land, and he makes great decisions with the football. Doug Martin and D.J. Harper are both high quality running backs for Boise, but the offensive line needs to do a little better job opening up holes for them. Tyler Shoemaker has just 13 catches this season, but six of them have been for a touchdown.
The Broncos defense dominated Nevada last weekend, and this is once again a very underrated unit. Boise State’s defense is solid against both the run and the pass. Boise State is allowing just 16.8 points per game this season. Though the defense doesn’t get a ton of attention, this unit has become a major strength for Boise State.
Fresno State is just 2-3 so far this season, but Pat Hill’s team will always put up a tough fight. David Carr’s younger brother, Derek Carr, is the quarterback for the Bulldogs this season. Carr is just a sophomore, but he has the skills to be a very good player for Fresno State. Robbie Rouse has been a very good running back for the Bulldogs. Rouse already has 600 yards this season, and he really has turned into the team’s workhorse. This offense is averaging 31 points per game so far this year.
The Bulldogs defense has struggled quite a bit against the run this year. Mississippi ran for 238 yards last weekend, and that Rebels team was struggling badly coming into that game. This is a defense that is giving up 32.4 points per game this year, which is 97th out of 120 teams in the nation.
Boise State is 21-7 ATS in their last 28 road games. Fresno State isn’t as good this year as they have been in the past. I think the Broncos cover here.
